In New Zealand, Year 6 is the sixth year of compulsory
Intermediate school: Years 7–8 (ages 10–13). Only two non-state intermediate schools exist. Secondary school: Years 9–13 (ages 13–18). Year 7–13 secondary school or Secondary school with intermediate: Years 7–13 (ages 10–18).
Years 0 to 8 are the primary years. Children in these years are generally aged 5 to 12 years.
Secondary school
Secondary education runs from Year 9 (around 12-14 years old) up to Year 13 (around 16-18 years old).
Your child's primary education starts at Year 1 and goes to Year 8 (around 5–12 years of age). Your child's secondary education goes from Year 9 to Year 13 (around 13–17 years of age).
You can leave a child under 14 at home or in another place if you've made reasonable provisions to have them supervised and cared for safely, and they're not left for a long time.
Consent is required when two or more people agree to take part in sexual activity. Without consent from all people involved, sexual activity is illegal. In Aotearoa New Zealand, you must be over 16 years of age to consent to sexual activity. The law is designed to protect young people from being taken advantage of.
Older New Zealanders
People between 65 and 80 are sometimes called 'young-old', and people over 80 are called 'old-old'.
In Australia, Year 7 is the eighth year of compulsory education and the first year of secondary school (high school). Children entering are generally aged from 11-12 and leave around 12-13 years old.
Secondary education is for children in Years 9 to 13, which is usually when they are between 13 and 19 years old. Your child might go to secondary school (sometimes referred to as college or high school) or your child might be at composite school or middle school that goes through to the secondary years.
In Australia:
Year 12 is the equivalent of New Zealand Year 13 and NCEA Level 3. each state has its own secondary education system.
Most Year 9 to 13 students will be learning between the curriculum levels 4 to 8. Your teenager may be at a different level for different learning areas, for example, they may be working at curriculum level 4 in mathematics and level 5 in technology.
After finishing primary or intermediate school, children attend secondary school to complete their final school years (Year 9–13). They can leave secondary school before reaching Year 13, but usually not until after their 16th birthday. The national curriculum is not strictly tied to year, level, or age.
New Zealand statutory rape law is violated when an individual has sexual contact with a person under age 16. The age of consent is raised to age 18 if the offender is in a guardianship role. A defense exists if the offender reasonably taken precautions and believed the victim to be 16 or over.
The lowest age of consent is in Nigeria (11) followed by the Philippines and Angola (12). The age of consent is 13 in three countries – Niger, Comoros and Burkina Faso.
Once you have turned 16 you don't need your parents' permission to leave home (although your parents will still be your legal guardians until you are 18). If they are worried about how you are living, they could apply to the court for an order saying that you must move home or live somewhere else.
If you are under 16 years old
If your parents or guardians are separated, you do not have a legal right to choose who you will live with.
14 – the babysitting age
In New Zealand, we commonly understand the age at which someone is allowed to babysit as being 14. However, it's important to note that this is not a legal age, but rather an interpretation of the law we talked about above.
There's no legal age a child can babysit – but if you leave your children with someone who's under 16 you're still responsible for their wellbeing. You should also think carefully about leaving your child alone with an older brother or sister.
