Only 44% of millennials are married, and millennials have continued a long-running trend of delaying marriage, with the median age of first marriage currently sitting at 30.4 for men and 28.6 for women.
Today, the average age for marriage is 29.2 for women and 30.9 for men, as reported by The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study. A recent Urban Institute report even predicts that a significant number of millennials will remain unmarried past the age of 40. These statistics indicate an important cultural shift.
In fact, the Millenial divorce rate is the lowest in many years, hovering around 25 percent. While Millennials are less likely to get married and get married at older ages, most of them do still get married - and they tend to stay that way.
From the mid-1970s until 2018 there was a steady and ongoing increase in the median age of men and women at first marriage. This upward trend halted between 2018 and 2020 but continued again in 2021. In 2021 the median age of men was 30.8 years, and women 29.4 years.
Millennials may see marriage as a financially risky move and delay it until they reach financial stability. Individuals are achieving financial stability at a later age, which may be a reason why some are delaying marriage. Yet, marriage correlates with greater economic stability.

We're Fine With Being Alone
That makes it hard to welcome a real relationship into their lives. We feel fine on our own and won't leave our comfort zones for another person. Sometimes millennials try to convince themselves that they're happy and better off alone by finding small reasons not to have a partner.
It has remained at around this percentage in recent years, shifting slightly higher, to 48%, in 2021. The general declining trend is partly due to the rise in divorces of long-term marriages where children are already grown up.
The average age for a couple entering their first divorce is 30 years old. And 60% of divorces involve spouses between the ages of 25 and 39. Women are more likely to file for divorce than men. The highest divorce rate is for African-American women aged 50 to 59.
Millennials, commonly considered babies born from 1980 to the late 1990s, are roughly between the ages of 18 and 38 now. Gen Xers, roughly between the ages of 39 and 54, are also credited with staying married. By contrast, Baby Boomers divorce at much higher rates than previous generations.

As for asset components, baby boomers have the most in retirement savings, as many people of the generation have not yet retired or been retired for very long.

In 2018, 58 percent of American millennial women born between 1982 and 1986 had children. On the other hand, 27 percent of American women born between 1995 and 1998 had children. Women entering their thirties were more likely to have a child compared to women in their twenties.
Though everyone finds the right time to marry or re-marry according to their own lifestyle, their future spouse and their future plans, Wolfinger's study published by the Institute of Family Studies suggest that couples who wait until between the ages of 28 and 32 are less likely to face divorce in the following years.
One factor impacting the birth rate is the age at which women first become mothers. And the mean reached a high of 27.3 years in 2021, up from 27.1 in 2020.
The type of job with the highest divorce rate is military work. An estimated 3.09% of workers who were married and had this type of job in 2019 divorced that same year.
