However, near the climax of the book, Snape leaves Harry his dying thoughts (to be viewed in the Pensieve) and ultimately reveals to Harry that he had been loyal to Albus Dumbledore throughout the series.
Despite her rejection of him when they were kids, Snape remained loyal to Lily and out of his undying love for her and became the most essential player in the game to take down the Dark Lord. Risking his life countless times, his loyalty to Dumbledore never wavered.
Snape Had Trusted Dumbledore To Keep Lily Safe
We find out of course, that the two became complicit in matters later on, but it is unlikely that they formed a true friendship. It seems more likely that they had an understanding with the common objective --or so it seemed at the time--of protecting Harry.
With the return of his Death Eaters at the end of Book Four, Voldemort declared that Snape had left their ranks forever. Conversely, Dumbledore went on declaring his undying trust in Snape.
Knowing that Snape has been on the Dumbledore's side for all seven of the Harry Potter books reveals him as an extremely brave man and a truly skilled spy. Snape has had to face and deceive the terrifying Lord Voldemort constantly.
“You disgust me,” said Dumbledore, and Harry had never heard so much contempt in his voice. Snape seemed to shrink a little, “You do not care, then, about the deaths of her husband and child? They can die, as long as you have what you want?” Snape said nothing, but merely looked up at Dumbledore.
Later in the year, Dumbledore revealed that Harry was in fact a Horcrux, meaning that he would eventually have to die. Now, as firmly established, Snape was not the greatest fan of Harry, but that didn't mean that he ever stopped loving Lily. Dumbledore was surprised that Snape seemed to care for the boy.
He doesn't trust Snape as Dumbledore does, but he believes that he can detect any disloyalty. Moreover, Voldemort regards Snape as highly intelligent and therefore ' as a true Slytherin ' a person whose top priority is to take care of himself. To his twisted mind, selfless equals stupid.
However, Draco was ordered by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore. Lestrange saw this as an opportunity to test Snape's loyalty and while making this vow to always watch over Draco, Lestrange forced Snape to agree to killing Dumbledore himself in case the youngster was unable to do so.
For the Potter uninitiated, “always” is how Snape explains to Dumbledore in the final book why his Patronus takes the same shape as the one belonging to his long-lost love: Harry Potter's mother, Lily.
His feelings for Lily seemed to be the motivation behind many of his decisions and it often seemed as though their friendship was the thing that he held most dear. If it wasn't for Snape's love for Lily, it could be suggested that the story of Harry Potter would have looked completely different.
Snape was in love with Lily and couldn't move on because of his guilt. Through his memories, it's revealed that he was worried about Harry's future when Lily and James died and that he was afraid of seeing Harry when he's old enough to attend Hogwarts.
Similarly to Harry, Snape's patronus represents a person. In the memories he gives Harry before his death, Snape shows Dumbledore his patronus, using the form to prove his love of Lily Potter, Harry's mother.
Harry also happened to be Snape's least favorite student.
A Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Snape is hostile to Harry due to his resemblance to his father James Potter, who bullied Snape during their time together at Hogwarts. As the series progresses, Snape's character becomes more layered and enigmatic.

Bellatrix Lestrange (née Black) is the first female Death Eater introduced in the books. Aunt of Draco Malfoy and Nymphadora Tonks. She was introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She is the most faithful member of Voldemort's inner circle.
In order to preserve his position as a trusted Death Eater, Severus Snape was forced to tell Voldemort the true date at which the Order planned to move Harry.
Draco Malfoy's mother Narcissa was cold, cunning and devoted to the Dark Lord. But she was also a mother, which meant she was willing to risk everything to make sure her son was safe. When Harry survived Voldemort's Killing Curse for the second time, Narcissa pretended he was dead so she could get to Draco.
Harry paid him tribute in forgiveness and gratitude. She continued: There's a whole essay in why Harry gave his son Snape's name, but the decision goes to the heart of who Harry was, post-war.
They were close friends, she saw in him someone special that she could care about. But she couldn't be with him. So, it seems like it was very unlikely that Lily ever found out Snape loved her.
