But amazingly, right before she passes away, Padme tells Obi-Wan, "There is good in him.
Turns out — as many have suspected — this was a low-key revelation that Palps is Anakin's daddy. And the new comic book proves it. The new-ish comic book issue, Darth Vader #25, features a flashback scene in which Anakin is able to relive certain parts of his life, including his birth.
When Padmé and Anakin were captured on Geonosis, believing they were going to die, she confessed her romantic feelings to him; after this, they could not deny their romantic feelings for each other, so they secretly got married on Naboo.
In The Phantom Menace, when Qui-Gon Jinn meets tiny Anakin Skywalker and his mother, he goes on about how the Force is like, crazy strong with Anakin or whatever, and then asks his mother about Anakin's dad. Shmi Skywalker is pretty clear in her answer: There isn't a father. She was impregnated by the Force.
After The Empire Strikes Back, Han and Leia do continue their relationship. In Episode VI, Han is nearly ready to distance himself from Leia since he thinks that Leia and Luke are into each other. But once Leia reveals that Luke is her brother, Leia rejoices and kisses Han, making them a couple for good.
The short answer is that creator George Lucas had no idea Leia would end up becoming Darth Vader's daughter. But Star Wars books and comics have tried to address the decades-old plot hole.
