There's no definitive global count, but studies and reports suggest a significant number of murderers are never caught, with some estimates indicating 9 out of 10 murderers go free in certain areas, while clearance rates for homicides in major US cities can hover around 30-50%, meaning many unsolved cases pile up, leaving perpetrators at large, often due to lack of funding, community mistrust, or insufficient resources, creating a large hidden population of unapprehended killers.
Retired NYPD officer and John Jay College lecturer Jillian Snider has conducted her own research, estimating that 51% to 52% of killings go unsolved in the U.S., many involving young Black and Latino men. “Which is mind-boggling,” Snider said, “because 50 years ago, agencies were solving upwards of 90%.”
