While Australia has massive coal reserves (potentially over 1,000 years' worth), the real question is when its use for electricity will end, with projections suggesting most coal power will cease by the mid-2030s or 2040s, driven by renewables, high costs, and grid operator AEMO's plans to retire the fleet by 2038, though some forecasts extend this to 2049, with plants potentially running only during peaks before shutting down entirely.
Coal demand is forecast to rise 0.5% in 2025 to a record 8.85 billion metric tons, the IEA's Coal 2025 report showed.
Australia is unlikely to become entirely uninhabitable soon, but climate change is making large areas, especially in the north, extremely hot and potentially unlivable under higher warming scenarios (around 3°C), straining infrastructure, impacting agriculture, and displacing vulnerable populations, while coastal areas face rising sea levels and severe erosion, making parts of cities and towns uninsurable and at risk. The primary threats are extreme heatwaves, bushfires, droughts, floods, and sea-level rise, disproportionately affecting regional, Indigenous, and disadvantaged communities, forcing significant adaptation and threatening the nation's food security.
According to the Integrated System Plan1 2022 (Australian Energy Market Operator, 2022a), up to 20 GW of the 23GW currently existing coal-fired electricity generation may be withdrawn by 2030. Indications are that Australia's coal fleet will close three times faster than is currently announced (Hannam, 2021).
Coal Reserves in Australia
Australia has proven reserves equivalent to 1,231.3 times its annual consumption levels. This means tit has about 1,231 years of coal left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves).
Australia is transitioning from coal-fired power to cleaner renewables, such as wind and solar. Coal-fired power stations are ageing, becoming very costly to run and are facing reliability issues. Moving to renewable energy will create a more reliable, affordable and clean energy system.
The survey also asked respondents which state or territory will be the safest place to live as the climate changes. Tasmania is the clear winner, with two in five Australians (41 per cent) choosing it, with other states falling well behind.
However, life expectancy at birth will be almost 90 by then. Australia will be bigger, older, denser and even more multicultural in 20 years time! Some 'Aussie Dreams' will have disappeared such as the 'quarter acre block' and along with it the Hills Hoist garden shed and enough space for a game of backyard cricket.
Finance experts believe that Australia is well on its way to being cashless, and that the change could come as soon as 2030.
Based on U.S. coal production in 2022, of about 0.594 billion short tons, the recoverable coal reserves would last about 422 years, and recoverable reserves at producing mines would last about 20 years. The actual number of years that those reserves will last depends on changes in production and reserves estimates.
Coal Power Is Replaced by Renewables, Batteries, and Modern Electronics. The phaseout of coal-fired power is progressing in many countries — not only to reduce the risk of unmanageable climate change but also because it now makes economic sense.
But bacteria and fungi did not immediately evolve the ability to decompose lignin, so the wood did not fully decay but became buried under sediment, eventually turning into coal. About 300 million years ago, mushrooms and other fungi developed this ability, ending the main coal-formation period of earth's history.
If oil hits $200 a barrel, it would trigger severe global economic consequences, including skyrocketing inflation, significant slowdowns in economic growth (potentially recession in some areas), increased costs for nearly everything (like food and transport), major disruptions to consumer spending, and pressure on governments to provide stimulus, while potentially spurring faster transitions to renewable energy and affecting geopolitical stability.
The Australian Government has released its Net Zero Plan, pledging to cut emissions by 62–70% on 2005 levels by 2035 and reach net zero by 2050. Six sector-specific plans and five decarbonisation priorities help map the pathway towards achieving the 2035 target and net zero by 2050.
By 2050, Melbourne is projected to be Australia's biggest city, surpassing Sydney, with forecasts suggesting its population could reach around 8 to 9 million people, driven by significant migration and natural growth, while Sydney's growth is expected to be slower. This rapid expansion will place considerable strain on Melbourne's infrastructure, leading to increased congestion, housing demand, and cost of living pressures, prompting city planning initiatives like Plan Melbourne to manage the growth sustainably.
However, the "First World" is generally thought of as the capitalist, industrial, wealthy, and developed countries. This definition includes the countries of North America and Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
While many experts warned of a recession for Australia in 2025 due to high inflation and interest rates, the economy largely avoided a major downturn, showing resilience with positive, albeit slower, GDP growth, low unemployment, and some signs of recovery by late 2025, though risks remained, particularly concerning household spending and global trade tensions. Forecasts from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and economists indicated a "slow grind" or modest improvement rather than a sharp crash, with some analysts predicting a potential for recession into 2026, but overall, Australia navigated the challenges better than initially feared.
Hobart, Tasmania, is widely recognized as the cheapest major city, but smaller regional towns in Queensland and South Australia can offer even lower living costs.
Further south, the Victorian regional hub of Shepparton has been called the "most unliveable city in Australia". It's predicted that by 2030, 90 per cent of homes in Shepparton will be uninsurable over fears of flooding from the river that snakes through town.
Return to trade
The plan for economic coercion failed, and for some commodities, Chinese imports from Australia are now as high as they have ever been. Driven by the inferiority of its own coal, China began importing Australian coal again in January 2023.
The main disadvantage of solar energy is its intermittency (it only works with sunlight, stopping at night and reducing output on cloudy days), which necessitates expensive battery storage for consistent power, alongside high upfront installation costs and significant space requirements for large-scale projects.
The United States is the largest producer of nuclear power, while France has the largest share of electricity generated by nuclear power, at about 65%. Some countries operated nuclear reactors in the past but currently have no operating nuclear power plants.
