To soften nits (lice eggs) so they can be combed out, saturate hair with substances like hair conditioner, olive oil, coconut oil, or even mayonnaise, cover it, and let it sit for hours or overnight to loosen the "glue" holding them, then use a fine-toothed nit comb in small sections on wet hair. White vinegar also helps dissolve the glue, while heat from a hair dryer can dehydrate and kill any remaining eggs or lice.
Wet Combing
Combing wet hair with a fine-toothed nit comb may remove lice and some nits. You can do this after treatment of the scalp with a medicine or in place of a medicine. Start by wetting the hair or coating it with hair conditioner or other products that can slow lice.
Head lice during pregnancy and breastfeeding can be treated with pediculicides including permethrin, malathion, and ivermectin. There are studies providing evidence that these agents do not increase the risk of birth defects.
A drying program was also used. Either washing done with a water temperature of at least 50°C or drying is necessary to kill head lice and nits.
The proportion of eggs killed varied from 89% with the bonnet‐style hairdryer to 98% with the directed handheld blow dryer and the Louse‐Buster with hand piece. The children were treated for about 30 min in their own homes, stopping temporarily if they indicated any discomfort.
Head lice are passed from one person to another by direct head to head contact, (friends whispering to each other, goodnight cuddles etc.), and therefore can spread easily. It is possible that they can be spread by the sharing of hats, combs and brushes. Head lice do not live in bedding, clothing or furniture.
If done properly, the first treatment will defeat all live lice, including the mommies or egg-laying lice, making the person no longer contagious.
You cannot prevent head lice
There's nothing you can do to prevent head lice. You can help stop them spreading by wet combing regularly, using a detection comb, to catch them early. Do not use medicated lotions and sprays to prevent head lice.
The risk of getting infested by a louse that has fallen onto a carpet or furniture is very small. Head lice survive less than 1–2 days if they fall off a person and cannot feed; nits cannot hatch and usually die within a week if they are not kept at the same temperature as that found close to the scalp.
Furthermore, the moisturizing properties of coconut oil can help to loosen the glue-like substance that lice use to attach their lice eggs (nits) to hair strands. This makes it easier to comb out both the live lice and their eggs.
Look for nits near hair follicle about ¼ inch from scalp. Nits (eggs) will be white or yellowish-brown. Nits are often more easily seen than lice, especially when the person has dark hair. Also look behind both ears and near the back of the neck.
Conditioner doesn't break the glue that holds nits to hair, but it changes the playing field in your favor. It coats the hair shaft so a fine‑tooth comb can stay in steady contact from scalp to tip without snagging. That slickness also slows live lice, making them easier to trap and remove.
You do not need to use regular shampoo or conditioner after the lice treatment. In fact, it is best to not shampoo again for 2 days, in order to give the medicine time to work. The medicine will kill the live lice bugs, generally within 12 hours.
Researchers have found apple cider vinegar is one of the most ineffective lice treatments. It doesn't do a good job of killing lice and cannot remove nits from your hair.

Adult lice can only live a day or so without blood for feeding and nymphs can only live for a few hours without feeding. Nits will generally die within a week away from the host and cannot hatch at temperature lower than that close to the human scalp.
Hair gels, hairspray, oils or other non-medicated hair products including dandruff shampoo will not kill lice or prevent eggs from hatching or sticking to the hair. 4. Old-fashion remedies aren't completely effective. Vinegar rinses or mayonnaise might kill lice but do not kill nits or detach them from hair.
The reality is that any adult who has hair can get head lice. However, it is incredibly rare for adults without children to get head lice. One of the major reasons for this is that people typically do a good job of controlling head lice.
Lice like to stay on a human host because they can't survive more than a day or two on their own. So it's less common for lice to be spread by sharing hairbrushes, bedding, clothing, hats, or head coverings. Since lice only crawl and don't jump or fly, you can't get lice from sitting next to someone with lice.
Did you know that your eyelashes are vulnerable to lice infestation? Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp but occasionally are found living on the eyebrows and eyelashes. Because head lice spread easily from person to person, cases are seen often in schools, affecting all socioeconomic groups.
Hair dye will do nothing to get rid of lice because, without manual removal of lice eggs from the hair, you will still be harboring a scalp full of nits (which will eventually hatch!).
Lice cannot “fall” on pillows, sheets, stuffed animals, and other bedding unless the hair that they are attached to fall. But they can't live on these surfaces, or on hats, scarves, furniture, or carpet. They also can't live on pets or any other animals. Nits can't live without a human host.
