To shorten time in purgatory (Catholic teaching), you can perform acts of piety like prayer, penance, and charity while alive, obtain indulgences (partial or plenary) for yourself or the dead, go to frequent confession and receive Communion, pray for the deceased, and patiently accept earthly suffering, all done with the intention of purification and detaching from sin to draw closer to God.
The Fourth Means by which we can lessen our time in Purgatory, or avoid it altogether, is by frequent Confession, Communion and daily assistance at Mass.
Let's take then, for our example and comparison, an account taken from a Poor Soul in Purgatory, whose suffering for 15 minutes had seemed like a year. This roughly means that 1 second feels like 8 hours, making 1/2 a minute feel like a week; Two minutes = a month, 1 day = a century, and 1 week = 7 centuries!
Help to Empty Purgatory
There is no time in purgatory as we know time. Purgatory is a state of purification rather than a place, as Pope Benedict pointed out in his encyclical Spe Salvi. It's difficult to think of ourselves in a state of being without also thinking of being somewhere in that state.
Dante's version of Purgatory is extraordinarily detailed and, in some key respects, strikingly original. First, he imagines Purgatory as being divided up into seven terraces, each one corresponding to a vice (in the order that Dante sees them: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Avarice and Prodigality, Gluttony and Lust).
God May Be Calling You to Intercession
Midnight to 3AM is the third watch. From 3AM to 6AM is the fourth. It was during this time that Jesus prayed and even walked on the water toward His disciples. Many believers sense that these hours carry heavy spiritual activity.
So no matter what you've done, if you are truly and genuinely sorry, the sin is forgiven when you confess. However, there might be some punishment or some penance that you still have to do. And typically this is time in purgatory. So an indulgence takes off some of the time that a person spends in purgatory.
For example, St. Thomas Aquinas argued against it, while St. Alphonsus Liguori argued in favor. The general consensus seems to be that while the souls in purgatory are not normally aware of our prayers, it is still possible that God at times reveals to them our prayers and accepts their prayers on our behalf.
The pain of loss suffered by the souls in purgatory is the pain of being temporarily excluded from the beatific vision. Dr. Ludwig Ott in Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma says, “The poor souls are conscious that they are children and friends of God and long for the most intimate unification with him.

Go to confession often; go to Mass and worship God; pray incessantly with a thankful heart for all the benefits God has given you; live for others. This is the road to heaven, for which every person is made. And pray for the souls in purgatory, especially by having Masses offered for them.
If a thousand years on earth is like one day in heaven (which may not be the case—compare the twenty-one angelic days in Daniel 10:13), this still is a comforting thought, particularly regarding our believing loved ones who are waiting to reunite with us.
Sometimes those souls in purgatory will visit a saint multiple times, until their soul is finally "released" from a state of purification. However, this type of encounter is extremely rare. God only allows such an experience for a specific reason and is not something that we can demand from God.
O LORD God almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which Thy divine Son Jesus shed in His cruel scourging, deliver the souls in purgatory, and especially that soul amongst them all which is nearest to its entrance into Thy glory: that so it may forthwith begin to praise and bless Thee forever. The souls in Purgatory see themselves doing the will of God, and they delight in what the love and mercy of God are creating in them. God impresses these two attributes on their minds in an instant, and, because they are in grace, they hear and understand it according to their own capacity, with great joy.
