An angry cat will be rigid, with tail held out stiff and straight or curled around and under their body. They will act very differently from usual – they could be silent, hissing, spitting or growling.
Vocal clues
Vocal kitties may have long conversations with you, and the pitch of their meow will allude to how they are feeling. A high-pitched meow is a content cat, while a low-pitched meow may indicate an unhappy or annoyed kitty. That ''prrrrupttt!'' sound many cats make, is also a good indication of a happy cat.
Approach your cat slowly and with caution.
After you have given your cat time and space to calm down, approach cautiously without actually touching the cat. You need to be sure that all visible signs of anger are gone, including the raised fur, hissing, and arched back.

One of the first subtle signs that your cat is mad at you is when you see her tail placed low, swishing quickly back and forth, from side to side, says Emily Parker, cat behavior expert at Catological.
There is no definitive answer as to how long your cat will do this. For many cats, minor misdemeanors seem to fall in the short-term memory category so it is likely all will be forgiven within a few hours to days. Kittens have a relatively short memory and can appear to be more forgiving than older cats.
Negative punishment means that something the cat likes is withheld in order to decrease the frequency of a behavior. Maybe you are petting the cat and the cat bites you out of excitement, so you stop petting them until they stop biting to decrease the biting behavior.
Your cat may be upset by something.
The slightest insult—perhaps even smelling like you were petting another cat—may put their nose out of joint and cause them to snub you. Does this mean they are being spiteful? Not at all! They are just communicating their feelings in the only way they know how.
