When we enter God's rest, we rest from our work, just like God rested from His. We rest from the exhausting, futile, unpleasant work of trying to earn our way to heaven. We rest from the desire to prove our righteousness to God over and over again.
Unplug from your technology, social media, and the news to allow your body, mind, heart, and soul to be fully present with God who longs to tend to your soul. Let yourself rest for a few minutes with no agenda. Listen for the silence and stillness that is present between your thoughts.
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
But why is rest important to God, and why do we need rest? Rest is one of the gifts that God gave us at the beginning of the creation account. He designed our bodies to need rest. Rest is when we recuperate, rejuvenate, and recenter so we can better serve Him.
Jesus walks among us, removing the yoke of sin that bends our backs and breaks our hearts. Suffering and sleeplessness may remain temporarily, but the burden of sin is no longer ours to carry. Jesus took that burden so we could know the kind of rest that seeps past our bones and into our weary souls.
Here, Jesus promises rest of love, healing, security and above all, peace of God and peace with God. You can find rest for your soul through prayers/communing with God, through faith in His word/promises and through total trust in His faithfulness/love.
Hebrews 4:9-11
10 for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
Don't worry about things that you don't control and cannot change. Live flat out for Christ and His kingdom. Go after righteousness with all that you have, and pursue this every day for the rest of your life. Leave tomorrow in the hands of God.
