You know itching might be liver-related if it's intense, occurs without a rash (or with scratch marks), gets worse at night or with heat, and is often felt on palms/soles, accompanied by other symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, or easy bruising, indicating bile salt buildup or poor liver function.
Pruritus is one of the most common symptoms experienced by patients with cholestatic liver disease. Pruritus associated with cholestasis is characteristically localized to the palms and soles, although generalized itching can also occur.
The first signs of a bad liver often include persistent fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, and a dull ache or tenderness in the upper right abdomen. Types of itch
Itch has been classified into four different clinical categories. These include neurogenic, psychogenic, neuropathic, and pruritoceptive (2) (Table 1).
