Doctors know you've stopped growing by monitoring your height over time on growth charts and, most definitively, by using a bone age X-ray, usually of the wrist, to check if your growth plates (epiphyseal plates) have closed and fused into solid bone, as seen on the X-ray. When these dark lines, indicating cartilage, disappear, the bones can no longer lengthen, signaling the end of significant growth, typically by late teens.
As mentioned in one of the articles one good way to see if you still have growth potential is to X-ray a wrist- the test is called a Pediatric Bone Age. It will show if your growth plates are still open. A doctor can also request lab tests- checking for hormones- such as thyroid, growth hormone and sex hormones.
