When milk dries up, breasts generally become softer and less full, but can also feel tender, achy, or bruised, especially if milk is still being produced but not expressed, potentially leading to engorgement, hard lumps, or clogged ducts in some areas. The feeling transitions from full and heavy to less firm, with reduced leaking and overall less sensation of fullness as the body adjusts to lower demand, though this can take days or weeks.
If you're wondering how to tell if your milk supply is drying up, one common sign is that your breasts will start to feel softer.
If your milk supply is decreasing, you'll notice:
Breast engorgement often occurs around three to four days after giving birth and can last about 48 hours. If your breasts do become engorged, they may feel hard, tight and painful. We have included some tips below to help minimise any discomfort you may experience when drying up your milk supply.
Once you have stopped breastfeeding or expressing milk and the feelings of fullness have gone, your breasts will continue to produce small amounts of milk for some time. Some mothers find their breasts start to feel full and uncomfortable a few days or more after they've stopped feeding, or expressing.
It may take several days or weeks for your breasts to completely stop making milk. Breast fullness should decrease in 1-3 days. You may feel emotional during this time. Be sure to take care of yourself.
You may notice smaller breasts and weight fluctuations. These are healthy and normal changes. Emotional Changes: Babies nurse for nutrients and emotional comfort. Weaning off of breastfeeding is a difficult change for them, and you may notice your baby is more fussy or upset.
How to Safely Dry Up Breast Milk Without Getting Mastitis
The "4-4-4 rule" for breast milk is a simple storage guideline: fresh milk is good for 4 hours at room temperature (up to 77°F/25°C), for 4 days in the refrigerator (39°F/4°C or colder), and up to 4-6 months (or longer) in a standard freezer (0°F/-18°C). It's a handy mnemonic, though some organizations like the CDC recommend up to 6 months in the freezer and the AAP up to 9 months, with deeper freezers offering even longer storage.
To help your breasts dry up faster, eat mints - like Altoids, Mint Chip Ice Cream, Peppermint candy, Peppermint tea, etc. Over-the-counter allergy medications, like Loratidine (Claritin) may help you dry up faster. Decongestants, like Pseudophed, will definately do the trick.
The 30-30-30 pumping method is a power pumping technique to increase milk supply by mimicking cluster feeding: pump for 30 minutes, rest for 30 minutes, then pump for another 30 minutes, totaling a 90-minute session designed to signal your body to make more milk. It's a demanding but effective strategy for building supply, often done once daily, focusing on frequent milk removal to boost demand, with consistency and patience key for results.
This does not mean that there is not enough milk. In fact, frequent feeding is necessary to establish a good breast milk supply. My breasts feel soft. When your milk supply adjusts to your baby's needs your breasts may not feel as full (this may occur anywhere between 3 to 12 weeks following birth).
In case of an urgent concern or emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department right away. If you stop removing milk from your breasts too fast, you can get clogged ducts, engorgement or a breast infection called mastitis.
❤️Use hands-on pumping: Massaging the breasts while pumping can help move milk through the ducts and encourage additional let-downs. ❤️Pump past the first stop in flow: When the milk flow slows, switch back to stimulation mode for a few minutes to trigger another let-down.
Your breasts feel softer and not as full after feeding
Your breasts should feel softer at the end of a feeding. Emptying as much milk from your breasts as possible will help create more supply for the next feeding.
The Let Down Reflex
There is a hormonal on and off switch controlled through breast stimulation. A baby or pump on your breast activates these hormones, which activates the let down reflex and tells your breasts to let down the milk. So, having a let down means that your milk has started to flow.
Breast milk does not need to be warmed. It can be served room temperature or cold.
One study suggests that cow's milk peptides are no longer detectable in breastmilk just 6 hours after a mother ingests dairy products (12), but it is likely that there is considerable variability between lactating parents.
As newborns get older, they'll nurse less often, and may have a more predictable schedule. Some might feed every 90 minutes, whereas others might go 2–3 hours between feedings. Newborns should not go more than about 4 hours without feeding, even overnight.
The World Health Organization recommends that all babies be exclusively breastfed for 6 months, then gradually introduced to appropriate foods after 6 months while continuing to breastfeed for 2 years or beyond.
Foods that Decrease Milk Supply
Heat encourages milk flow; cold therapy can help stop or lessen making milk. If you are very full, first apply heat, with either a shower or warm compress. Next, pump only enough to relieve your pain & extra fullness.
However, excess fat and loose skin may still remain. During this period, natural weight loss continues, especially if you're breastfeeding, which can burn up to 500 extra calories per day. Many women find their belly begins to flatten with a combination of breastfeeding, gentle exercise, and a balanced diet.
Rule #2: The Breast Milk Storage Guidelines.

Most breastfeeding mothers will lose the 5-15 lbs of "safety weight" within a year or less of complete weaning. Often the weight is lost in only a few months. Some lose more and may experience what we refer to as "The Great Deflate" where the breasts and other parts of the woman's body have less adipose tissue.
