Permethrin kills the scabies mite and eggs. Permethrin is the drug of choice for the treatment of scabies.
A scabies infestation causes intense itching (pruritus) which leads to scratching and damage of the skin (excoriation). If left untreated, the infestation may last for years, and has been called the seven year itch.
You should consult with a doctor or go to the nearest emergency room or urgent care if: 1- You have a skin rash and are itching. 2- Your roommate, household member or sexual partner has been diagnosed with scabies or has a skin rash and is itching.
Persons with crusted scabies should be considered highly contagious and appropriate isolation procedures should be used to protect other persons from becoming infested. In general, a person diagnosed with scabies could return to work once treatment is begun.
Rash: Many people get the scabies rash. This rash causes little bumps that often form a line. The bumps can look like hives, tiny bites, knots under the skin, or pimples. Some people develop scaly patches that look like eczema.
Treatment can get rid of the mites, eliminate symptoms such as itch, and treat an infection that has developed. For the first few days to a week, the rash and itch can worsen during treatment. Within four weeks, your skin should heal. If your skin has not healed within 4 weeks, you may still have mites.

Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning.
The developmental stages of S. scabiei consist of egg, larva, protonymph, tritonymph and adult. This life-cycle is typical of that for other astigmatid mites.
Ink test. The burrows of scabies mites can be identified by using an ink test. Ink is rubbed around an area of itchy skin before being wiped off with an alcohol pad. If scabies burrows are present, some of the ink will remain and will have tracked into the burrows, showing up as a dark line.

Scabies can lead to skin sores and serious complications like septicaemia (a bloodstream infection), heart disease and kidney problems. It is treated using creams or oral medications. Scabies is contagious and spreads through skin-to-skin contact. It occurs worldwide but is most common in low-income tropical areas.
Essential oils, especially tea tree, clove, palmarosa, and eucalyptus oils, are potential complementary or alternative products to treat S. scabiei infections in humans or animals, as well as to control the mites in the environment.
Parasites - Scabies
Human scabies is caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). The microscopic scabies mite burrows into the upper layer of the skin where it lives and lays its eggs. The most common symptoms of scabies are intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash.
The scabies rash takes the form of small, red bumps that may look like pimples, bug bites, hives or knots under the skin. You might be able to see the burrow tracks created by the mites, which appear as raised lines of tiny blisters or bumps. Some people develop scaly patches that resemble eczema.
The most common symptoms are: Blisters or bumps — Pink, raised bumps with a clear top filled with fluid are likely to appear on areas of the body where scabies have infested. Itching — A sensation of a foreign object crawling on the skin will create constant and sometimes severe itching, especially at night.
The mites have been reported to be capable of survival for 19 days at 10 °C and 97% relative humidity, although they are unable to move and penetrate skin at temperatures below 20 °C [4,21]. Scabies mites survive less than 24 h in a temperature of 34 °C [2].
During an identified scabies outbreak, staff members who have been providing care to an identified case should not be rotated to other resident care units until 24 hours after completion of the staff member's scabicidal treatment. The case should also be isolated from other residents for 24 hours.
Scabies is a common disease and typically described as a skin condition with sparing of face and scalp in adults. However, crusted scabies is not conventional scabies. It can also affect the scalp.
The mites burrow into the upper layer of the skin but never below the stratum corneum. The burrows appear as tiny raised serpentine lines that are grayish or skin-colored and can be a centimeter or more in length.
Severe itching (pruritus), especially at night, is the earliest and most common symptom of scabies. A pimple-like (papular) itchy (pruritic) “scabies rash” is also common. Itching and rash may affect much of the body or be limited to common sites such as: Between the fingers.

The spots may look red. They are more difficult to see on dark skin, but you should be able to feel them. Tiny mites lay eggs in the skin, leaving lines with a dot at one end. The rash can appear anywhere, but it often starts between the fingers.
