Angel cannot forgive Tess for her past: "O Tess, forgiveness does not apply to the case! You were one person; now you are another." Tess is dumbfounded by Angel's reaction and seeks to have him understand her plight. He cannot see her past as she sees it.

HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us follows the sequence leading up to Tess's death almost beat-for-beat until we get to the manner of death itself. Switching out her death by firing squad to her making her final stand against a zombie hoard is a decision that just fits the character and the scenario better.

However, Tess confesses about her past to her husband in their wedding night, after Angel confesses his previous affair with a woman.
In the show, she distracts an incoming pack of infected, which leads us to a rather unique moment. A runner spots Tess and instead of violently charging her as we've seen infected do before, it calmly walks over and gives her an open-mouthed kiss to allow tendrils of the evolved cordyceps fungi to pass into her.
After Joel and Ellie find out that she was bitten, they make their escape while Tess stays behind. The only difference in the game? She dies fending off FEDRA soldiers instead of the infected.
Tess thrived in creating connections in order to get supplies in and out of the Boston QZ. Meanwhile, Joel is a formidable fighter and could bring anyone who double-crossed them to their knees. More than being smuggling partners, they were also romantic partners.

Tess was intended to be the main antagonist of the 2013 video game The Last of Us.
Tess, played by Anna Torv, ultimately sacrificed herself so Joel (Pedro Pascal) could get Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to safety and so her immunity could be further researched to hopefully find a cure for the cordyceps fungus infection.
After the wedding, Retty attempted suicide and Marian became an alcoholic. After this disclosure, Angel asks Tess for forgiveness, telling her of his past indiscretion with an older woman in London. Tess says that she, too, has a confession and tells him of her past with Alec.
It could be argued that even after seducing Tess, Alec does indeed fall in love with her and makes his plans to have her as his own a second time. Alec is friendly at first, using his charms to lure Tess back to The Slopes for a second visit.
Angel is shaken/shocked and, at first, he can't believe what he has just learnt. He questions everything he knows about his wife: he doesn't recognize her anymore. Angel asks Tess the reason why she has waited so long to make her confession, but then he can remember preventing her from telling him about her past.
