Doctors paid $39,000 a year by the drug companies whose medicine they prescribe. SOME senior doctors are earning up to $39,000 in drug company payments a year for overseas trips, speaking and consultancy fees, a new report reveals.
The NHS pays pharmacists and dispensing GPs a flat rate for each drug, meaning they make money if they can buy it more cheaply from wholesalers.
The new QOF incentives will be offered to GP surgeries for: Prescribing statins to patients with type 1 diabetes that are over 40 years of age or have had diabetes for over 10 years. The QOF rewards are in line with the controversial NICE guidelines on lipid modification.
Ornstein continued, "It's illegal to give kickbacks to a doctor to prescribe drugs, but it is legal to give money to doctors to help promote your drug. Some doctors make tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year beyond their normal practice just for working with the industry."
Controlled medicines
The GMC guidance is clear that you must not prescribe a controlled substance for yourself or anyone close to you unless: "no other person with the legal right to prescribe is available to assess and prescribe without a delay.
