A human can contract tapeworms through: drinking contaminated water. interacting with affected animals and contaminated soil. consuming contaminated food.
The worms that have been reported to have been found in tap water are midge larvae, flatworms, roundworms (otherwise known as nematodes), and rotifers. The typical size of parasitic worms or helmiths, such as flukes, tapeworms, hookworms, ascris, pinworms, trichina worms, and filaria worms is 30-50 microns in diameter.
Cryptosporidium parasites get into surface water sources, such as rivers and lakes, from the stool (feces) of infected animals or people. Public water systems that get their water from these surface water sources can contain Cryptosporidium oocysts (the egg-like form of the parasite).
Eggs pass from the original host through their poop into the local soil and water. There, they contaminate the food and drinking water of other animals. Animals who consume the eggs — including insects and fish — can incubate the tapeworm larvae. Humans become infected by accidentally ingesting the eggs or the larvae.

Tap Water Parasite Symptoms
In some scenarios, you can even get parasites from your home tap water. If you're wondering whether you're in trouble with your own water, there are a handful of water parasite symptoms to consider, such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting, dehydration, and weight loss.
The more acidic the vinegar is, the better. Mix one tablespoon of rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) in a glass of water and drink every day to kill parasites. If you are suffering from a severe infestation, drink three glasses every day.
Showers that take unfiltered water directly from lakes or rivers may also spread the infection, but the worms aren't found in the sea, chlorinated swimming pools or properly treated water supplies.
Many but not all available home water filters remove Cryptosporidium. Some filter designs are more suitable for removal of Cryptosporidium than others. Filters that have the words “reverse osmosis” on the label protect against Cryptosporidium. Some other types of filters that function by micro-straining also work.
