Normal scabies can develop into crusted scabies after a skin reaction. The condition affects all parts of the body, including your head, neck, nails and scalp.
How do I know if I have lice or scabies? If you itch on your head or other hairy parts of your body, and the itching happens at all times of day, it could be lice. Scabies happens on the body but usually not on the head or neck area. Itching with scabies is severe and often worse at night.

Eggs are laid in small numbers as the mite burrows, and, as these hatch, six-legged larvae climb out on to the skin and search for hair follicles, where they feed and moult (discard old cuticles to grow). In the hair follicles, the larvae show the first nymphal stages, with eight legs.

Scabies rarely infests the scalp of adults, although the hairline, neck, side of the head, and forehead may be infested in older people and in infants. Infants should be treated on the scalp, side of the head, and forehead. Leave the permethrin cream on the skin for 8 to 14 hours. Wash off by taking a shower or bath.
What can cause sores or scabs on the scalp? Sores or scabs on the scalp are often harmless and clear up on their own. However, they can sometimes be a sign of a condition that may require treatment, such as psoriasis, contact dermatitis, or head lice.

After treatment (8 hours for cream, 24 hours for lotion) you can bath or shower as normal. You can return to work or school. You will not give scabies to anyone.
Items like bedding, clothing, and towels used by an infested person can be cleaned by washing with hot water and drying on high heat. For items that cannot be washed, store in a sealed plastic bag for at least 72 hours to kill any mites. Vacuum and clean rooms and furniture used by the person with scabies.
How can I remove scabies mites from my clothes? Scabies mites do not survive more than 2-3 days away from human skin. Items such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by a person with scabies can be decontaminated by machine-washing in hot water and drying using the hot cycle or by dry-cleaning.
