Adult dogs are generally okay on their own for 4-6 hours a day. But, many dogs are good at adapting to being alone for 8-9 hours while you are at work if they are provided with enough space to comfortably move around.
Most experts also agree that 8-10 hours should be about the longest period you can leave a dog alone, provided he has access to food and water. Dogs are highly sociable creatures and many of them tend to feel stressed and anxious if left too long without a companion.

Make sure he has constructive ways to occupy his time when you're not around. Stuff a Kong toy with enough goodies to keep him busy for hours. Fill a puzzle toy with his daily ration of kibble so he has to work for his meals. Hide treats or favorite toys around the house for him to find while you're gone.

It's normal to feel guilty about leaving your furry friend alone. But, as long as you're still getting their exercise in (especially before you leave) and don't make a big deal about leaving, then your canine companion should do just fine.
Time passes
Owners often wonder if dogs have a sense of time passing and if our dogs miss us when we are gone. Well, the answer to that is a definite yes. When dogs in one study were left home alone for varying periods of time, they responded with differing levels of enthusiasm on their owner's return.
“Too much affection can also mean that you can give your dog positive cues at the wrong time to back up bad behaviors, which can lead to behavioral problems like separation anxiety, vocalizing for attention, and/or damaging items in the home to get attention,” Dr. Nelson explains.
Start by leaving the house for about thirty minutes every day for a week. When you come home, act normal and allow your dog to settle, then reward them with love and treats! If your dog responds well to thirty minutes of alone time, begin adding more minutes and then hours to the clock.
Caged dog syndrome occurs when dogs are confined to small, cramped spaces without interaction for prolonged periods of time without any relief. This can lead to severe physical and mental trauma, including a lack of socialization, mental stimulation, and proper training.
Dogs are sociable animals and love company, but although it is good practice that they learn to be home alone for a period of time, it is not advisable to leave them alone for very long periods, like overnight. Many dogs feel worried when they are left on their own, especially if they have been used to having company.
“If your dog looks relaxed, takes a nap while you're away and is not entertaining themselves by playing with toys or is eating, that is not a reason for concern,” Semel says. “The behavior is not categorized as being lonely or unhappy, but is most likely a sign of resting!”

Note: Whatever you decide, remember that being alone at night can be scary for a puppy, especially if they've never been separated from their mum and littermates before. It's normal for a puppy to need time and training to feel comfortable sleeping on their own through the night.
