It's implied that Goku can survive the vacuum of space, but he simply can't breathe. If I remember correctly, during the Moro saga, Goku wanted to pursue the fight in space to assist Buu. At which point Vegeta reminded him he couldn't because Saiyans were not able to survive in the vacuum of space.
Saiyans can't breathe in space, and thats a fact. It has nothing to do with training, their lungs, or anything like that (well, it could be, but I doubt it). While Broly is one of the most famous Saiyans in Dragon Ball history given his rare status as a Legendary Super Saiyan, he actually isn't the rarest type of Saiyan out there as Vegeta confirms that that honor goes to his very own son, Trunks.
