Dehiscence, the separation of a surgical wound, typically occurs in the early stages of healing, most commonly around 5 to 8 days post-surgery, during the transition from the inflammatory phase to the proliferative phase, when the body hasn't yet built enough collagen for tensile strength, often triggered by infection or strain.
Dehiscence is a partial or total separation of previously approximated wound edges, due to a failure of proper wound healing. This scenario typically occurs 5 to 8 days following surgery when healing is still in the early stages.
The split can happen in just the skin layers, or the entire wound can open back up. Wound dehiscence often can happen with abdominal surgeries, such as C-sections (when babies are delivered through an incision in the abdomen) and laparotomies (which allow doctors to examine the abdominal organs).

Smaller dehiscences may close within a few weeks with proper wound care, while larger or complex cases could require several months. Close monitoring by healthcare professionals is vital to assess progress and detect complications.
Signs That Your Surgical Wound Isn't Healing Properly

Mild cases of partial dehiscence may be managed with proper wound care, antibiotics, and close monitoring. However, in more severe cases, especially complete dehiscence, surgical intervention may be needed to properly close the wound and prevent further complications.
Stage 2 pressure injury: partial-thickness loss of skin with exposed dermis. The wound bed is viable, pink or red, moist (important note: granulation tissue is red and moist) and also may present as an intact or ruptured serum-filled blister. Adipose (fat) and deeper tissues are not visible.
