iOS 17 is coming later this year, and the first developer beta has already dropped at WWDC 2023.
iOS 17 will not support iPhone 8 or the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, and the iPhone X all came out the same year. They are all able to run iOS 16 though, so they should get support through security updates for at least another year.
iOS 17 is compatible with the iPhone XS and newer, meaning that support has been dropped for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.
Some devices including the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X won't get the option to install iOS 17. It not only means these call makers losing new features but it could also end up being pretty costly for those that own one.

As for battery life, both models offer super-fast charging, but iPhone 8 Plus has a longer battery life. So, while the phones naturally have a lot in common, if you're looking for sharper images on a bigger screen and a more powerful battery, then the iPhone 8 Plus is the phone for you.
