Sugar isn't inherently non-vegan, but many refined white sugars from sugarcane are processed using bone char (charred animal bones) as a decolorizing filter to achieve that bright white color, making them non-vegan for many due to animal use, even if the char isn't in the final product. Beet sugar, organic sugar, raw sugar, and certified vegan sugars avoid this animal product, making them suitable vegan alternatives.
Sugar itself is a plant-derived carbohydrate and therefore vegetarian by origin; the only vegetarian concern is the use of bone char in refining certain cane sugars. Choose beet sugar, organic, or ``vegan'' labeled sugar to avoid any animal-derived processing.
Sugar is typically derived from sugar cane and, in some instances, sugar beets. Both are perfectly acceptable plant-based sources, so pass muster with many vegetarians and vegans. However, refined sugar has had an asterisk attached to it in recent years, one that has to do with how it achieves its snowy white color.
Bone char—often referred to as natural carbon—is widely used by the sugar industry as a decolorizing filter, which allows the sugar cane to achieve its desirable white color. Other types of filters involve granular carbon or an ion-exchange system rather than bone char.
The ONLY way to determine for sure if any brand of sugar is vegan-friendly or not is to contact the manufacturer directly to ask specifically about bone char (if not labelled as vegan). Fun fact: Sugar made in Australia is all bone-char free!
The Role of Bone Char in Sugar Processing
Bone char is used as a filtration medium for whitening sugar. It is not retained in the final product but is used in the refining process, and so such sugar is non-veg.
Miley Cyrus stopped being strictly vegan because she experienced health issues, feeling malnourished and that her brain wasn't functioning properly after six years on the diet, leading her to reintroduce fish and omegas for better brain function, though she still values animal welfare. She noted feeling "much sharper" and healthier after adding animal products like fish back into her diet, which was a difficult transition emotionally, but a necessary one for her body.
Refined sugar.
It includes white granulated sugar, bakers' sugar and confectioners' sugar and is the purest form of sugar, without molasses or other impurities.
Isaiah 43:24 says: “You have not bought me sweet cane with money.” The native or wild cane found throughout Pal. in streams and ditches is Saccharum biflorum, and this could have been the one mentioned. Most Bible students feel, however, that the sweet-tasting cane was the true Saccharum officinarum, i.e. sugar cane.
Sugarcane has more vitamins and minerals than refined sugar, including very small amounts of: Iron. Magnesium. Vitamin B1 (thiamine)
The 30-30-30 diet for vegans involves eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up, followed by 30 minutes of low-intensity cardio (like walking), aiming for fat loss and better metabolism by boosting protein intake and steady exercise early in the day. To make it vegan, focus on soy products (tofu, soy milk), legumes (lentils), nuts, seeds, protein powder, and whole grains for that crucial 30g protein breakfast, pairing it with fruits and healthy fats, and then doing your walk or gentle bike ride after.
Vegan junk food: Vegan ice cream, candy, cookies, chips and sauces generally contain just as much added sugar and fat as their non-vegan counterparts. Plus, they contain almost no vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds.
How to Tell If Sugar Is Vegan
At the refinery, cane sugar is further refined to remove the final impurities (1). Molasses, which is a thick, dark syrup byproduct from the production of sugar, is removed by blending the raw sugar with hot water, and then placing it in a centrifuge. The dark molasses is spun off, leaving white sugar crystals.
Many types of organic, raw granulated cane sugars are certified vegan, meaning they don't use bone char in their processing. As a result, these products have a off-white to tan color. You can learn more about our findings on baking with these sugars in our review. Some sugar is made from sugar beets.
Producers make brown sugar by taking refined white sugar and adding molasses to it, which means that whether brown sugar is vegan depends on how they refine that white sugar. Much like white sugar, some brown sugar uses vegan refining processes, while others may use animal bone char.
Before we dig in, we should ask ourselves, “Would Jesus eat this?” By way of answer, Dr. Colbert says, “Let me assure you, Jesus did not eat processed foods, too much sugar, or food additives… .
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal properties of the drug, according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. The study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous healings.
Brazil is the world's top producer of sugar with an output in the 2023/24 marketing year of 43.7 MMT.
Actually, it's necessary: Our bodies run on sugar. The body processes the carbohydrates from food and turns much of it into glucose (sugar). The cells pull the glucose from the bloodstream and use it for fuel and energy.
American actor. Over the years, Johnny Depp went through several periods when he ate vegan for various reasons – for his health, in preparation for acting roles or perhaps at the request of his (now ex-) girlfriend.
Miley Cyrus has publicly shared she lives with Reinke's edema, a vocal cord disorder causing swelling, hoarseness, and a deeper, raspy voice, which she embraces as part of her unique sound but makes touring difficult. While she's mentioned this and past health struggles like ovarian cysts, rumors of severe diagnoses (like cancer) circulating online (e.g., in posts from late 2025) are unverified and likely false, as recent reports focus on her vocal condition.
But today, is she still vegan? The answer is no. In 2020, Beyoncé had to soften her vegan diet and added fish and Omega3 to her diet because she said her brain was malfunctioning.
