This CW series might be set about a century after the War of the Roses that inspired Game of Thrones, but it depicts yet another real-life game of thrones.
Mary was but a girl of 15 when she married Francis with whom she had been brought up. Francis, a year younger, adored Mary and she bore him a strong sisterly affection. He was a weak and sickly child, and it is unlikely that the marriage was ever consummated.
Henri's wife, Catherine de Medici resented Mary as she was a Queen, giving her precedence over Catherine's daughters in the royal nursery. In Scotland, Mary's mother, Marie de Guise was to become Regent ruling in Mary's name from 1554.

Premiering this past Thursday on the CW was a period drama with a supernatural twist. “Reign” details the story of Mary, Queen of Scots, in the year 1557.
Clarissa was the product of an illicit affair between the Queen of France, Catherine de' Medici, and the Viscount of Delacroix, Richard. She was born with a birthmark on her face which could be traced back to Richard, so Catherine insisted it be removed.
While continuing to fortify Edinburgh Castle, Mary became seriously ill, and over the course of the next eight days her mind began to wander; on some days she could not even speak. On 8 June she made her will. She died of dropsy on 11 June 1560.
Historically, the marriage between Mary and Francis was regarded as harmonious and happy. There were never any love triangles; Francis considered himself to be in love with Mary from their first meeting as children. His death (from a cerebral abscess, not assassins) at the age of 16 left her grief-stricken.
