The character Merlin from the BBC series is widely interpreted as queer or gay, especially regarding his deep, romantic bond with King Arthur, a relationship the show's creator, Julian Murphy, described as a "love story between two men," though Merlin also had connections with women like Freya. While the show intentionally left his sexuality open for interpretation and fan discussion, many viewers and critics see strong queer subtext and themes, especially in the "Merthur" (Merlin/Arthur) dynamic.
Then, revealing himself, Merlin prophesies that whereas Arthur will die a worshipful death, Merlin's death will be shameful — he will be sealed in the earth alive. A few days later a squire comes to the court with his dying master, wounded by Sir Pellanor.
Morgana catches up with Merlin and Arthur and drives their horses away, but she is killed by Merlin wielding Excalibur. Without horses, Merlin cannot get Arthur to the lake in time, and Arthur dies in Merlin's arms after thanking him for everything he has done.
Mordred as a young boy keeps calling Merlin "Emrys", which is actually Merlin's name as a Celtic druid and sorcerer. In Welsh, Merlin's full real name is actually Myrddin Wynn Emrys. Myrddin is his first name, Wynn is his family name and Emrys is his druid name.
In ancient Welsh mythology, Emrys was believed to be the original name of the famous sorcerer known as Merlin. His immortality can be interpreted both literally, as an individual who possessed everlasting existence, as well as figuratively, representing his indelible impact on the world of Arthurian legends.
But let's set the record straight: Morgana was never Uther's child. She was his ward, taken under his care after the death of her father, Gorlois, the Duke of Cornwall. In Season 1, Episode 12, Morgana confronts Uther with chilling clarity. She tells him face to face that he sent her father to his death.
Morgana Pendragon is the main antagonist of the BBC series, Merlin. She is the illegitimate daughter of Uther Pendragon and the half-sister of Arthur Pendragon and Morgause.
Merlin loves Arthur due to their intertwined destiny, where Merlin's magic exists to protect Arthur and guide him to become the great king he's fated to be, fostering a deep bond of friendship, loyalty, and profound care that evolves from obligation to genuine love, with some interpretations suggesting romantic love as well, especially given their willingness to sacrifice everything for each other.
Arthur, who is no saint himself, has a child out of wedlock – the product of an incestuous union with his half-sister Morgause (in some versions of the legend it is Morgan, but the two have often been conflated, especially in more modern retellings).
Morgana later becomes deeply attached to Mordred, a young druid boy whose life Merlin saved, risking Uther's wrath should their actions be discovered (The Beginning of the End). Morgana was willing to defy Uther and hide the boy in her chambers; however, she is caught trying to return Mordred to the Druids.

Cornelius Sigan was described as one of the most powerful sorcerers ever to live. Although he is only shown once in the series, he is shown to be an extraordinarily powerful individual. While he was alive, he was said to be able control the tides and change night to day.
Lancelot sacrificed himself in Arthur's place to banish the Dorocha, leaving Arthur deeply saddened. He held a memorial for Lancelot and made a speech naming him as the noblest knight he'd ever known (The Darkest Hour).
In Palamedes and some other works, including the Post-Vulgate cycle, King Arthur's Camelot is eventually razed to the ground by the treacherous King Mark of Cornwall (who had besieged it earlier) in his invasion of Logres after the Battle of Camlann.
As it turned out, Galand's Commandment of Truth, which turned anybody to stone should they lie to him, turns Merlin in a statue to horror of Arthur. The Deadly Sins were believed to have been killed by Galand, when in reality, his memories were altered by Gowther's Invasion.
Conversely, the Livre d'Artus, a late alternative (and updated) variant of the Prose Lancelot, shows a completely peaceful scene taking place under a blooming hawthorn tree where Merlin is lovingly put to sleep by Viviane, as it is required by his destined fate that she has learned of.
At the end, only Arthur and his knight Sir Bedivere were left on their side. Mordred was the only one left on his side. Arthur rushed to kill Mordred, but accidentally dropped Excalibur and the enchanted scabbard. Arthur killed Mordred with a spear, but not before Mordred delivered a deadly blow to Arthur's head.
