The Sith apprentice Darth Maul wielded a double-bladed lightsaber made by joining two hilts together end-to-end. Maul's dexterity and extensive training allowed him to use his weapon as a single-bladed saber, or to activate both crimson blades and fight multiple opponents at once.
Maul took considerable pride in the fashioning of the crystals for his weapon. Creating a set of four synthetic lightsaber crystals in a compression furnace, he went into deep meditation for four days, using the Force to control and monitor the formation of the crystals.
In truth, Maul survived and was found by his brother, Savage Opress. Opress recovered the lightsaber from Lotho Minor and returned Maul to Dathomir to be healed by their mother, Talzin. Maul's lightsaber was given back to him by his brother and he used it in his quest for vengeance against Kenobi.

Besalisk Jedi General Pong Krell was unique in that he dual-wielded double-bladed lightsabers, taking advantage of his extra set of arms. Jedi Temple Guards and Jedi Brutes also wielded double-bladed lightsabers, with the former having ones that produced yellow blades.
In the construction of a Sith lightsaber, individuals partook in a process known as bleeding. By ways of the Force, they would pour negative emotions such as rage, hate, fear and pain into kyber crystals. The process would result in the crystals gaining a distinctive crimson or red hue.
