While playing Pennywise in
Frightening & Intense Scenes (22) It disguises itself as many frightening things in the movie. Pennywise can morph his mouth into a giant gaping mouth with layers of sharp teeth which he uses it mangle and eat his victims. This is all done with CGI.
That hunger for tasty, tasty, beautiful fear is pretty much the sole reason It returns to Derry, Maine every 27 years to torment and feed on the townsfolk before retreating into a new cycle of slumber.
Pennywise isn't bad per se. I have no idea what It fed on for the millions of years before humans came to Derry, but you have to realize Pennywise is a creature. When he takes kids he is only doing it for food he isn't doing it out of malice or evil intent. That's why he only takes enough kids to satisfy his hunger.
Originally a novel published in 1986 and then adapted for tv as a 2-part miniseries) in 1990 and then into films in 2017 and 2019. One thing that has remained an important part of the characters look is his teeth. In the first film he reveals those classic Pennywise Teeth we're all familiar with.
Stephen King's 'IT' introduced readers to a one-of-a-kind creature that can take any form, the most common one being Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and as menacing as it is, this creature has one big enemy it's truly scared of: Maturin, the turtle.
In the novel, It's origins are nebulous. He took the form of a clown most frequently, Mr. Bob Gray or Pennywise, but his true form is an ancient eldritch entity from another universe who landed in the town that would become Derry by way of an asteroid and first awoke in 1715.

Pennywise offers Georgie his boat back, but when Georgie attempts to reach out to it, Pennywise grabs Georgie's arm and bites it off, leaving Georgie to bleed to death in the rain.
Throughout the book, It is generally referred to as male, usually appearing as Pennywise. The Losers come to believe It may be female after seeing it in the form of a monstrous giant spider that lays eggs.
Throughout the summer and their trials against Pennywise and the school bullies, the Losers realize that none of the adults in Derry can actually see Pennywise or the horrors he is committing against the children of Derry.
What symbolizes a child's sense of imagination is manipulated to lure children to the clown, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). Pennywise's most notable ability is to manifest as each of the children's fears. Whenever the red balloon appears, it signals that Pennywise is close, if not already present.
This proves to be its undoing; Eddie nearly chokes it when it takes the form of a leper and is small enough for him to do that. When sufficiently weakened, the Losers kill It by crushing the heart it must have in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
The prosthetic teeth that Bill Skarsgård wears made him drool. Bill Skarsgård wears prosthetic teeth to get that big, bucktoothed grin of Pennywise. The prosthetics made him drool excessively but they leave a lot of that in the movie as director Andy Muschietti felt it nicely fit into the ravenous nature of Pennywise.
The cinematic adaptation of Stephen King's It Chapter Two depicted the satisfying death of Pennywise while subtly hearkening back to Pennywise's first 1988 victim, Bill's brother Georgie.
Throughout Stephen King's It, Pennywise is referred to as a male, but author Stephen King pulled a fast one on readers in the It book ending by revealing the creature's true form was a pregnant spider, implying that it is, in fact, biologically female.

If Georgie hadn't died, the Losers Club wouldn't have fought Pennywise and come back 27 years later to finish IT off.
While he comes close to presenting as the real Georgie, it was his fatal mistake of calling the boat “it” instead of “she” that caused Bill to acknowledge that it was Pennywise in disguise. Bill shoots the look-a-like, and the Losers have an all out brawl that defeats the creature for the time being.

It comes in many shapes and sizes. Most iconically, It takes the form of Pennywise the Clown, whose real name is actually Bob Gray (anticlimactic, honestly).

It is the real monster behind the monster. If you want to get technical, It is an alien, but It's origin goes well beyond that. It is actually an ancient cosmic deity. A god of destruction, not just of our world, but of multiple worlds and even multiple universes.
