John Dutton disowns Jamie due to a pattern of perceived disloyalty, culminating in Jamie's deep betrayal by conspiring with Governor Grimes and his biological father, Garrett Randall, to orchestrate John's assassination and take the ranch, a severe breach of the Dutton legacy, though their relationship was always fraught with John's contempt for Jamie not being a "real" Dutton and forcing him into law instead of ranching.
He killed to save his father and the ranch's reputations. The grudge that Beth has against him is from a decision made when they were both kids and Jamie only tried to preserve their last name and the ranch. He also wasn't the one to setup his father's death even though the show paints it like he did.
Upon arrival Jamie was informed that all women seeking abortions were required to be sterilized in the process. Jamie kept this information from Beth until after the procedure and made her believe it was beyond her control. Jamie and Beth kept this to themselves until it was revealed to John almost twenty years later.
As Rip holds him back, Beth stabs him in the chest with a giant knife. They dump his body in Wyoming and claim that Beth acted in self-defense. Just like that, no more Jamie. If Yellowstone continues with a Beth and Rip spin-off, the married couple will need to find some new enemies to fight.
Amid that constantly growing feud, much of the tension has come from the fact that Jamie isn't a biological Dutton, but instead an adopted child. It's for this reason that John (Kevin Costner) and Beth always speak of Jamie as an outsider.
As a teen, Jamie helped cover up a teenage pregnancy by taking Bethany to a clinic on a Native American reservation that forcibly sterilized women by performing a hysterectomy without their consent, to avoid anyone seeing a Dutton in a clinic in a high populated place like Bozeman, knowing the kind of weight the Dutton ...
Jamie (Wes Bentley) is the adopted son of John and Evelyn but was later disinherited after several legal battles and double crosses. His adoption was kept hidden from him until he met his biological father, Garrett Randall. Randall allegedly killed Jamie's birth mother when Jamie was just a baby.
While "Yellowstone" season 5 later reveals that Jamie wasn't directly behind John's assassination, he was involved enough. His lover, Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri), arranged the hit job and he accepts it because his career is more important than family.
While he made several mistakes to deserve harsh treatment, his family never supported him or gave him the chance to make amends. Due to his various insecurities, he spiraled down into a villainous role, where his main goal became to ruin the Dutton family.
1 Elsa Dutton
Elsa Dutton's death is doubtlessly the saddest in the Yellowstone franchise.
Beth Dutton: BPD with ASPD traits
Her father ensured that any remnants of softness in her were burned away, leaving her with BPD-level emotional volatility but ASPD-level detachment when necessary.
In the final episode of Yellowstone, John Dutton's remaining two children, Beth and Kayce, sell the Yellowstone Ranch to their Broken Rock Indian Reservation neighbors for pennies on the dollar, if the tribe agrees never to sell or divide it.
The Dutton family finally has a service for John, where Beth once again promises to avenge her dad. After laying a white rose on his casket, Beth leans down and whispers, "I will avenge you," then leaves the service.
Beth's mom wanted to toughen her up. So she could succeed in a man's world. In season one episode seven, when Beth 'becomes a woman' her mother says “I have to turn you into the man most men will never be … You're gonna hate it, sweetheart.”
Jamie did not inform Beth that she would be sterilized during her early abortion. This led to her not being able to embrace motherhood anymore.
The fourth season ended with Jamie Dutton, the adopted son of the powerful Dutton family, killing his biological father, Garrett Randall.
Beth (Kelly Reilly) revealed in Season 3 Episode 5, “Cowboys and Dreamers,” that Jamie (Wes Bentley) committed an appalling act of betrayal when she was pregnant with Rip's (Cole Hauser) child as a teenager. She went to her big brother for help to get an abortion, and he repaid her trust with a forced sterilization.
He was told she would be sterilized and he could take her to a better clinic in Larger City, but he was afraid someone at Larger City Clinic would leak that the Dutton girl had had an abortion. Having her butchered up at a rez clinic wouldn't get out.
Jamie Dutton
As an adult, he accidentally discovers that he is not a biological member of the Dutton family, having been adopted by John and Evelyn when his biological father was imprisoned for murdering Jamie's mother when Jamie was an infant.
Part of his vendetta with John involved his late wife, Phyllis, and blamed John for not defending his actions in court. Beth soon learned about Riggins and confronted Jamie over the issue, who finally made it clear that it was Garrett who requested the hit.
John's youngest son, Kayce is the Dutton with the strongest moral compass. Kayce is an incredibly conflicted man, as his sense of right and wrong puts him at odds with his father's ruthlessness in defending his ranch, though Kayce's intense loyalty sees him constantly compelled to protect his family and their legacy.
John died by an apparent suicide, but his death was revealed to the audience to be the result of a murder-for-hire plot launched by the partner of his estranged, adopted son Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), fixer Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri).
This is the root cause of Beth Dutton's hatred toward her brother, and it dates back to their teenage years. It all started after she got pregnant and asked Jamie to help her get an abortion, so he took her to a free clinic outside of town and had her sterilized without her consent.
Fans may recall that Jamie had a son with Christina in Season 2, a development addressed when Beth Dutton found a baby seat in Jamie's car in Season 5. However, with Taylor Sheridan tying up several loose strands with tragic fatalities, Jamie Jr. got lost in the shuffle.
Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) is James's son and John Dutton III's grandfather. John Dutton II was born to Spencer and Alex. John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) is the current patriarch in the main Yellowstone timeline.
