Jellyfish stings hurt so much because their tentacles have thousands of tiny, barbed stingers (nematocysts) that fire venom-filled harpoons into your skin on contact, causing intense pain, burning, swelling, and inflammation due to the venom's protein cocktail, which can damage nerve, blood, and skin cells. The severity depends on the jellyfish type and venom potency, with some causing severe systemic reactions, while the physical penetration by the barbs also stimulates pain receptors.

Since we know the venom is a protein that has been micro-inoculated superficially, application of heat may help by denaturing these toxins. Immerse the affected area in hot water (no hotter than 113°F/45°C) for 30 to 90 minutes. If you are assisting a sting victim, test the water on yourself first to assess heat level.
