Summary. Incorrect attachment of the baby on the breast is the most common cause of nipple pain from breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is possible if you have inverted nipples, mastitis, breast/nipple thrush, eczema or nipple vasospasm. Avoid soaps and shampoos during showering to help prevent nipple dryness.

A breast cyst can be large or small, and the surrounding breast tissue may be tender. A breast cyst may appear before your menstrual period and get smaller or disappear afterward.
Pleurisy. Pleurisy is a condition that causes sharp, stabbing pain under your breast that can be made worse by breathing in deeply. Pleurisy is caused by inflammation of the thin membranes that surround the outside of your lungs and the inside of your chest cavity, called pleura.

If your pain feels focused in one area of the breast, it can be worth checking that with ultrasound. But pain is more likely the result of an underlying benign condition such as fibrocystic breast changes or a single cyst or fibroadenoma. Often a definite underlying cause can't be found.
