The feeling in your face or lips after you have dermal filler injections is fullness in an area that previously didn't feel like that. This is because a small pocket of fluid has been added under your dermal layer. Your sensory perception of your own flesh will adjust and you won't notice after a while.
The treated area will feel different after your injections. It will likely seem fuller than usual due to the presence of the filler and post-treatment swelling. Some tenderness is also to be expected, particularly when the cheeks and temples have been injected. These sensations usually subside within a few weeks.
Lumpiness is very common to feel in your skin in the days after injection of dermal filler into the face, including the upper lip body and the cheeks and the chin area and along wrinkles and folds when injected to lift these. It will usually resolve within a couple of weeks.
In reality, fillers take up to four weeks to “settle,” according to Healthline. Different types of fillers can settle more quickly, and your lifestyle and similar factors can also affect the amount of time it takes to settle.
That said, these injectable treatments take some time to integrate into your tissues, and it's normal for your dermal filler to take up to two weeks to fully settle into your face.
The Results Improve Over Time
Even as the hyaluronic acid is processed by your body, healthy collagen and elastin grow at a more significant rate. This means you will see initial improvement nearly immediately. They will improve over six to eight weeks.
It should be noted that the lips may feel hard for around two weeks after injections. This is due to swelling, the filler settling, and the healing process.
Are Lip Fillers Supposed to Feel Hard? Your lips may feel stiff or rigid immediately after injection with dermal fillers. Don't worry — this is entirely normal, and the lip fillers will soften with time.
Although extremely rare, dermal fillers are able to migrate within the skin if consistent and adequate pressure is applied to them. For this reason, we advise patients not to get a facial, massage (on the treated skin), or microdermabrasion for the first two weeks following their filler injections.
What Happens If You Are Unhappy With Your Injections? If you've given your injections time to settle but you are still concerned about the results, talk to your plastic surgeon. The mistake most people make is going to another doctor when they are unhappy with the results.
Pillow face is a condition that occurs as a result of a person getting over-injected with dermal fillers in their face. This leads to an overstuffed look, which causes the checks and other areas of the face to puff out.
Fortunately, lumps can be treated easily. The first thing is massaging the area. The more you massage the better it will look. The massage smoothens out the product and allows it to integrate into your skin.
You should massage after having injectable filler in areas where the skin is thinner, such as the lips or lower eyelids, but massaging too much and in other areas could actually break down the filler, resulting in less volume. Or it may cause filler migration.
Bumps are usually caused when too much is injected into one area, or too near the surface of the skin. Thicker skin is often more forgiving, so a good practitioner will adapt the technique to suit thinner and more mature skin. It is best not to touch the treated area for the first 24 hours.
While it is possible for fillers to migrate, this side effect is extremely rare and can be avoided by choosing a qualified injector. Though filler migration is very uncommon, its likelihood increases when fillers are performed by an inexperienced or underqualified injector.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Do not use AHA, Retinols/Vitamin C therapy or oil based make-up for 24 hours. Avoid facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, IPL or energy based treatments and microdermabrasion for two weeks after treatment.
“[The filler] is a gel and it can move if you're pressing on it,” she says. Sleeping on your face, receiving a facial, intense kissing, and pressing on swollen areas are all absolute no-gos for the first month of healing.
DON'T touch the treated area for at least 6-8 hours afterwards. The risk of infection is much higher in the time immediately after your filler treatment, so medical experts recommend not touching the affected area for at least that amount of time.
We recommend patients get touch-up filler injections every 6-9 months to maintain full results, though some patients are happy with filler treatments every 9-12 months.
Traditionally cosmetic practitioners would inject 1mL of dermal filler into one area of the face. For example, 1mL lip filler and 1mL cheek filler, however, only 1ml of filler can enhance your entire face.
Swelling will reach its peak at around 24-72 hours after treatment, at which point, it will begin to gradually subside. Occasionally, swelling can last for 1-4 weeks, but this isn't as common. Most people do see an improvement within 3 days.
Avoid excessive touching or massaging the treated areas for about 6 hours after the injections. The treated areas can be washed with a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil® Cerave® or Dove® unscented. Your satisfaction is important to us!
Some patients like to sleep on their back the first night after treatment, although there is no hard evidence that sleeping position might affect your filler treatment. Avoid sleeping on your face for a week after treatment.
This happens when the filler was injected too superficially. Patient may take notice to the uneven appearance several weeks post treatment or 3+ months post treatment when the body starts to slowly metabolize the filler. Additional areas that can be “botched” are cheekbones, chin, marionette lines, etc.
