There are many reasons why babies may show a strong preference for one caregiver over another. Sometimes it's about proximity, routine, or familiarity. Sometimes it's linked to life events and developmental milestones. And other times, these preferences just come and go for no particular reason.
It's a completely normal part of growing up and while most common in the toddler stages, favouring one parent over another can happen at other stages of childhood too, depending on the emotional and developmental needs of the child at the time.
In fact, it usually takes infants until they're about 2 or 3 months old before they start to show a strong preference for mom, dad or anyone. While a baby is primed for social interaction soon after birth, its abilities are pretty limited.
At some stage, most babies develop very strong attachments to their primary caregivers. Sometimes they share the love between both parents, but it's not uncommon for babies to just want to focus their attention on one parent only. This makes caring for them difficult, in all sorts of ways.
Some studies have even found that newborns tend to resemble their mothers more than their fathers. In a 1999 study published in Evolution & Human Behavior, French and Serge Brédart of the University of Liège in Belgium set out to replicate the paternal-resemblance finding and were unable to do so.
Most people feel as though they look more like their biological mom or biological dad. They may even think they act more like one than the other. And while it is true that you get half of your genes from each parent, the genes from your father are more dominant, especially when it comes to your health.
It has to do with basic human emotions kids know only too well – love, and a sense of security and relaxation in the presence of the one you love. Of course, kids love both their parents, which is why they enjoy spending time and doing fun things with Daddy.
Often, bonding happens gradually over the baby's first year of life. So if you don't feel these strong feelings of closeness in the first days or weeks after birth, that's normal.
It's not uncommon for children to prefer one parent over the other. Sometimes this is due to a change in the parenting roles: a move, a new job, bedrest, separation. During these transitions, parents may shift who does bedtime, who gets breakfast, or who is in charge of daycare pickup.

Much to many's disbelief, it is not because "dada" is easier to say than "mama". In fact a 'd' sound is far more complex than a 'm' sound. The reason is that dad is usually the first person that the baby identifies as spereate to themselves, where as mums are typically the primary attachment.
When your baby gazes into your eyes when they're in your arms, it's baby's way of expressing they're attracted to you, and want to get to know you even better. Babies will try to copy your facial expressions, test it out by sticking out your tongue when baby is gazing at you, they may well copy.

1-3 Months
The first three months with your baby often seem the hardest. Sleep-deprived parents can feel overwhelmed, but that is normal and you will quickly learn how to read your baby's cues and personality. Don't worry about “spoiling” your baby at this stage.

Emotionally absent or cold mothers can be unresponsive to their children's needs. They may act distracted and uninterested during interactions, or they could actively reject any attempts of the child to get close. They may continue acting this way with adult children.
Normally babies develop a close attachment bond with their main caregiver (usually their parents) within the first months of life. If they are in a situation where they do not receive normal love and care, they cannot develop this close bond. This may result in a condition called attachment disorder.
Baby blues are feelings of sadness that you may have in the first few days after having a baby. Up to 4 in 5 new parents (80 percent) have the baby blues. It can affect new parents of any race, age, income, culture or education level.
Kids just expect more from their mother. You are their number one nurturer, feeder, comforter and carer. Dads might be doing 50 per cent or more of the parenting, it doesn't matter. This is a biological instinct that babies crave their mother's attention.
By 3 months, they will smile back at you. By 4 to 6 months, they will turn to you and expect you to respond when upset. By 7 or 8 months, they will have a special response just for you (they may also be upset by strangers). Your baby may also start to respond to your stress, anger or sadness.
Research has shown that, during pregnancy, your baby feels what you feel—and with the same intensity. That means if you're crying, your baby feels the same emotion, as if it's their own.
Not worrying may be easier said than done, but truly, parental preference is a normal and healthy part of toddlerhood. It can pop up between ages one to three, as children become more independent and learn to express their opinions.
"It's fairly common for little kids to have a preference for a particular parent," says child clinical psychologist Dr Erinn Hawkins. "The relationship between a child and an attachment figure — a person to whom they become connected — forms very early on in life and becomes a selective thing."
