Netflix removes The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) films because it licenses content for limited periods, and Warner Bros. As it was, The Lord of the Rings was a joint production between three studios because none of them could afford the up-front costs of filming all three movies at once. HBO could not afford a production like that. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc. did not exist (I think Netflix did but only as a DVD renting service).
