In Season 4, his biological father even tried to have the Duttons killed in order to make room for Jamie to shine. It seemingly made little sense for the self-serving Jamie to murder his only ally.
Jamie then learns that his biological father Garrett is responsible for ordering the attacks on the Duttons.
The underlying reason for John Dutton's dislike of Jamie is their differing personality and views on life. It is why they often fight, argue, and even work against each other in various stages of their life. Of course, it's also possible that John dislikes Jamie because he's adopted and not a true-blooded Dutton.
And so, in a moment of desperation and rage, Jamie pulls the trigger and kills his own father. It's a shocking, gut-wrenching scene that leaves viewers reeling. But in the end, it all makes a twisted sort of sense. "Yellowstone" is a show about power, family, and the lengths people will go to protect what's theirs.

In "Yellowstone," we see glimpses of Beth taking on the role of confidante and caretaker for her younger brother, Kayce, as well as her father, John. This may have fostered resentment in Evelyn, who could feel threatened by Beth's usurpation of traditional maternal roles.
What's more, is Beth is now officially a mother. She adopted a son (Carter) after finally marrying Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in season four.
Later in the season, John has Jamie interview Riggins to find out more. Jamie, of course, finds out that Riggins' previous cellmate was Garrett Randall, Jamie's biological father. When Jamie confronts him, Garrett admits to organizing the hit—and implies he would do it again.
Kayce and John have been estranged for sometime at the beginning of the series. It is later revealed that part of what drove them apart was that Kayce got Monica pregnant and they planned to keep the baby. That is when John forced Kayce to take the brand.

Garrett Randall, played by Will Patton, was Jamie Dutton's biological father and season four's major antagonist. Garrett Randall, a former ranch hand, was found guilty of murdering his wife when Jamie was a little kid. He lived alone on his farm after getting out of prison.
Jamie Dutton's real parents are Garrett and Phyllis Randall, and originally Jamie went by the name Michael Randall. The Duttons adopted Jamie when he was only three months old and raised him as their own.

Decades ago, Beth had an abortion, which this same brother had cosigned for. But he had withheld from her that the women's clinic where she would get the abortion required she also get a full hysterectomy—a far-too-common practice at clinics that provided care for indigenous women until well into the 1970s.
As has also been explored in flashbacks, the Dutton family matriarch (played by Gretchen Mol) died during a horse riding accident while out with a young Beth and her other living brother, Kayce (Luke Grimes).
While she is scared that it may damage her relationship with Rip, Beth does tell him about her being sterile.
Beth hates Jamie on Yellowstone because he is the reason she can't have biological children. As a teenager, Beth got pregnant with Rip's baby and asked Jamie for help. Without telling her, he took her to a native American abortion clinic that required sterilization as part of the process.
Jamie takes her to an abortion clinic where the only way to perform an abortion is through sterilization, which Beth did not know. What is this? Beth was just 15 years old when she found out she was pregnant with Rip's child. Too scared to tell her father or Rip, she seeks help from Jamie.
