Following her transformation into a vampire, she remembered the memories Damon made her forget and grew tired of Stefan's desire to "fix" her instead of accepting her. Enjoying how Damon made her feel alive, her relationship with Stefan ended and she began a relationship with Damon.
But Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, co-creators of The Vampire Diaries, didn't always intend for Stefan to be the only brother to die. In fact, Williamson always imagined Elena ending up with Stefan — not Damon — and he would have wanted to return to the love triangle before the series finished.
Their relationship was rekindled and lasted into the beginning of season 4. Though they eventually broke up when Elena began to reciprocate Damon's love, and chose to be honest with Stefan about her feelings and intentions. He was determined to move on, before he came upon the discovery that Elena was sired to Damon.
While both brothers were in love with Katherine and then Elena, I've noticed that Damon's love for these women exceeded Stefan's, while Stefan always loved his brother more.
She had to choose which one got the goodbye. And ultimately, she chose Stefan. Because, as she told Damon, "No matter what I feel for you, I never unfell for him," a line that acknowledged her feelings for both brothers and allowed viewers to understand her decision.
They werent offically back together until she turned, so saying she was unfaithful is all a matter of how you percieve it. Yes, she did develop feelings for Damon while Stefan was off with Klaus but she in the end, picked to "say goodbye" to Stefan. Once she was cahnged, Elena changed as a person herself.
Elena's emotions are turned off following Jeremy's death, and what's real and what isn't becomes even blurrier than before. It's not until the very end of the season that all is finally revealed. In a fan-favorite scene, Elena confesses her love for Damon after the sire bond is finally broken.
Damon remains entirely devoted to Elena throughout the remaining two seasons as Elena sleeps peacefully. In the season 8 finale, she is revealed to be happily married to Damon.

The episode ends with Elena and Damon fighting over their relationship and how much one depends on another. They decide to break up because their love makes them something else of what they really are but they end up in bed together because they cannot fight what they feel for each other.
Elena said her goodbye to a dying Stefan, before living a long and happy life with Damon, whom she married. Though a few years later, Elena and Damon divorced; with Elena getting custody of their five children. Elena is a member of the Petrova Family, and a member of the Gilbert Family.

Elena connects with Damon as she adjusts to life as a vampire. The couple sleeps together for the first time in "My Brother's Keeper" after Elena breaks up with Stefan.

In My Brother's Keeper, and We'll Always Have Bourbon Street, it was revealed that Elena, as well as Charlotte were sired to Damon, as it was his blood that turned them.
“I didn't sleep with Damon because of the sire bond,” she says. “I slept with Damon because I'm in love with him.” The revelation seems to be as surprising to Elena as it is to her ex-boyfriend.
After investigating, it turned out that their sire bond was forged after Elena died with Damon's blood in her system, which transformed her into a vampire (season 3, episode 22, "The Departed"). The sire bond can only be made when the human-turned-vampire loves their maker too.
