She stated that Zeus' death was necessary if humanity was ever to be freed, and would aid Kratos throughout his quest.
Trivia. Athena was infected by evils with greed, as she presumably became ambitious to rule over the world, and possibly became jealous of Zeus' authority over the Greek pantheon. She also allowed her ambition cloud her judgment, as she manipulated Kratos to kill the Olympians.
Athena became the goddess of crafts and skilled peacetime pursuits in general. She was particularly known as the patroness of spinning and weaving. That she ultimately became allegorized to personify wisdom and righteousness was a natural development of her patronage of skill.
We see very clearly that he hates himself and feels nothing but disgust for his past. Knowing this and that he can never forget the past he tries to commit suicide. Athena decides to keep him alive and living with the memory and guilt. She promotes him to the position of God of War.

Athena attempted to stop Kratos from entering the place know as the Domain of Death, but failed as he killed Thanoatos, and lost his brother during the battle. In God of War II, she wants to stop Kratos from angering the Gods, and stop him from killing Zeus as revenge.
She was favored by Zeus among the rest of his children, which ignited the jealousy of her brother, Ares. Athena even went as far to protect Zeus from being killed by Kratos, though whether she did that to protect the world or out of genuine love for her father was unknown.
Throughout the entire game ,it seems that Kratos regretted killing Zeus and for the longest time and I couldn't really understand why. He becomes very solemn, quiet and sometimes defensive whenever he is brought up.
He feels regret over killing his own father most of all.
Even telling his own son afterwards. "we must be better than this. '" meaning he ever wants his son to be alike himself.
Athena is the number one person that Kratos did not mean to kill, and showed great regret upon doing so. When he met her in the Underworld, he seemed dearly sorry that he had impaled her. Also, she seemed to be the only god he would listen to, save Hephestaus.
She sacrificed herself because she didn't want Zeus to die. It was pretty clear that dying and reaching a higher plane of existence changed her.

Athena was regarded as the favorite daughter of Zeus, having been born from his fore head. This could be why she wasn't punished. Another reason could be fear of being overthrown by Athena herself, as prophesied by Gaia and Ouranos.
He hates Ares for tricking him into killing his wife and daughter. He hates Zeus for attempting to kill him, but I always thought that was a little muddy motive. Zeus was justified for trying to stop Kratos as he was murdering everyone to begin with.
God of War II
Zeus, however, weakened Kratos and tricked him into abandoning his godly powers into the Blade of Olympus, which Zeus used to kill Kratos. Although he overcame all obstacles, Kratos was stunned at Zeus's betrayal and swore revenge as he died. Kratos fell into the Underworld, but was rescued by Gaia.
God of War Series
Later, Kratos would become a god himself as the God of War, but after he was (apparently) stripped of his godly powers and killed by Zeus, there was no one else to take the title of God of War.
In fear that Kratos, his son, would overthrow him, Zeus decided to betray and murder him. While Kratos was destroying Rhodes in an effort to be noticed by fellow gods, Zeus drained his godly power and gave life to a nearby statue, which was sent to kill Kratos.
Despite Hercules animosity towards Kratos, it does appear they were close at some point, as they both address each other as brothers and he is the only Demigod/God Kratos was noticeably reluctant to fight.
The world was ultimately brought to ruin after Kratos violently murdered several prominent Gods of the Greek Pantheon. Their deaths triggered a series of cataclysmic events that killed the majority of mortals living there and made it largely uninhabitable. Kratos is currently the only known survivor.
Perhaps partly because of the strange circumstances of her birth, Athena is often cited as Zeus's favourite child. He also greatly admired her strength of character and fighting spirit. Some believe Athena was Zeus's first born child, which might, somewhat unfairly, suggest why he chose her as his favourite.
Athena was an armed warrior goddess. The Parthenon at Athens was her most famous shrine. She never had a true lover or someone to hug and hold her; all she had was her loving mother, caring father and most of all her brothers and sisters.
In some versions of Greek mythology, Zeus ate his wife Metis because it was known that their second child would be more powerful than him.
