You can't drink much water after an epidural (or during labor generally) due to the risk of aspiration if you need emergency general anesthesia for complications, causing stomach contents to enter the lungs; labor slows stomach emptying and increases this risk, so clear liquids/ice chips are often allowed, but solid food is restricted until delivery, though policies are changing for low-risk births.
