Greece, at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, is not just a final destination for migrants from Asia and Africa but is seen as a gateway or stepping stone to Western Europe. Greece's large coastline and multiple islands mean that policing migrants' entry is very difficult.
29,069 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2022 in Greece — according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Syria, Afghanistan and from Palestine. A total of 30,344 decisions have been made on initial applications. Around 62% of them were answered positively.
Greek authorities have been accused of failing to rescue hundreds of refugees and migrants onboard a vessel that sunk near the coastal town of Pylos, causing one of the biggest tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea.

The threat of homelessness has, in part, caused demographic shifts by contributing to poor economic conditions. A worsening birth rate of 3.9% due to high costs has been noted. The phenomenon of brain drain has also been intensified, with 350,000 to 427,000 Greeks emigrating for employment opportunities.
Greece hosts large numbers of asylum seekers while failing to protect their rights, including by pushing new arrivals back to Turkey. Migrant children face homelessness and lack of access to adequate healthcare and education. Victims of hate crimes are reluctant to report attacks to the police.
[71] Out of the total number of asylum seekers and refugees remaining on the islands at the end of 2020, 7,093 were residing in the RICs of Samos, Chios, Leros and Kos, with a total nominal capacity of 3,338 accommodation places, while 7,172 persons were residing in the temporary camp of Mavrovouni, Lesvos.
