Ariel's sisters are all different because, in the 2023 live-action remake, they represent the seven seas, each with unique designs and skin tones reflecting different global cultures and marine life to show diversity, unlike the original animation where they were mostly identical. In the prequel, they had distinct features but the same coloring, while fan theories suggest different mothers or a fish-like reproductive process for their varied looks in the classic film.
King Triton's 7 daughters represent the 7 seas. Their hair colors are different because the seas are different.
And outside of varied hair colors, they all look the same. Of course, the animated mermaids are the daughters of King Triton and Queen Athena, but that may change in the live-action version with the implication that Ariel's sisters have different mothers.
Similar to the Broadway musical, this version is the estranged younger sister of King Triton and Ariel's aunt.
In the movie The Little Mermaid (Clements & Musker, 1989), Ariel displays symptoms of disposophobia, which is defined as the fear of getting rid of things.
Ursula is only drawn with six tentacles, due to the studio's budget and difficulty in coordinating eight tentacles (though she has eight limbs if one include her arms). Pat Carroll has stated that this makes her a squid, though biologically she still resembles an octopus far more than any other sea-creature.
In the end, Tinker Bell didn't lose her status — she evolved beyond it. Rather than being one princess among many, she became a standalone icon, proving that you don't need a crown to be one of Disney's most magical and enduring characters.
Trivia. In the 2023 live-action remake, each daughter (added with different ethnicities and cultures) rules one of the seven seas (with fictional names), and their fins are based on real-life fish. This also implies that they are actually half-sisters.
Out of the official Disney Princess line- up, there are a few who aren't actual princesses by either birth or marriage Mulan, Moana, Raya and technically Pocahontas (like Moana, she's the daughter of a chief, no one would really call her a 'princess' in her own culture I don't think?)
The most prominent figure for queer representation in The Little Mermaid movies has always been Ursula, who was visually designed and inspired by the fiery personality of the legendary drag queen Divine. Divine was known for being bigger than life, confident, talented, and vulgar.
The original story behind The Little Mermaid
The Sea Witch informs her that if she kills the prince she will turn back into a mermaid and live, but Ariel chooses to sacrifice herself, throwing herself into the sea and becoming sea foam.
Arista - red; Attina - orange; Adella - yellow; Ariel - green; Aquata - blue; Andrina - purple; Alana - pink.
Eric's mother in this rendition is Black, and this is explained - Eric is adopted. Triton, however, is Spanish I assume (since he's played by Javier Bardem), and all his daughters are different races. I saw a white, Asian and Black mermaid at a minimum, and this is not explained.
Rapunzel – Germany
Disney's 2010 hit film, Tangled, was loosely based on the German tale of Rapunzel. Though the film is set in a fictional island kingdom, the architecture and cultural influences appear to closely resemble medieval Germany.
Disney cast a Black actress, Halle Bailey, as Ariel in the live-action The Little Mermaid primarily because she had the perfect voice, spirit, and talent for the role, with the decision also aligning with Disney's broader strategy to increase diversity, offer representation to Black audiences, and reimagine classic characters, building on the original fairy tale's flexibility regarding appearance and the film's Caribbean setting.
A famous god known to all mermaid lovers from the book “The Little Mermaid” was the father of Ariel, King Triton. Triton was an ancient Greek god of the sea and he was the son of gods Poseidon and Amphitrite.
How can they look so much diffrent from each other but they are sisters? It looks like no one has the same mother. Severus Jake as the King Triton reproduced with a princess from each sea, only Ariel was from his actual wife, Athena, who died.
Ariel searches the sea for Melody, regretting not sharing her heritage with her, while Melody explores her newfound abilities as a mermaid, and has a strong feeling that she was meant to be part of the sea. Later, Morgana tells Melody she can only make the spell permanent if she retrieves Triton's trident.
Princess Eilonwy has been nicknamed by fans as the "Forgotten Disney Princess" because of her little-known status and the fact she is not an "official" Disney Princess, despite being a princess by birth, like Kida Nedakh from Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
Esmeralda was removed in 2005. Tinker Bell was also removed in 2005, but she would go on to headline the sister franchise Disney Fairies (also created by Mooney).
The movie that almost ruined Disney was The Black Cauldron (1985), a dark fantasy animated film that was a massive box office bomb, nearly leading to the closure of Disney's animation division due to its huge budget, disappointing returns, and challenging themes that were too intense for its family audience. Its failure prompted major restructuring, eventually paving the way for the Disney Renaissance led by films like The Little Mermaid.
In this case, the diminutive priest officiating the ceremony of Prince Eric's wedding has what appears to be a notable bulge. This was in the original theatrical release as well as the first video (1990) and second (1998-1999) video releases. This shot was altered for all future releases beginning with the 2006 DVD.
Ursala did not stop and Triton was forced to banish his sister. This backstory is why Ariel trusted Ursala in the movie. Yes Ursala is the wicked sea witch who she has grown up hearing bad things about. But she is also Ariel's aunt who was scholarly and knows first hand how harsh a person Triton can be.
Cecaelia – Half-human, half-octopus. The term was coined by fans in the late 2000s to describe characters such as Ursula from The Little Mermaid and may also apply to Harry Styles in the music video of "Music for a Sushi Restaurant".
