In the season four finale of The Vampire Diaries, Graduation, Katherine slept with Niklaus Mikaelson and conceived her daughter, Adyelya.
This is, in part, due to Katherine realizing she is deeply in love with not only Elijah, but also Klaus, and the two brothers finally coming to understand that neither of them can give up Katherine to the other and live without her.
Katherine was more of an obsession for Stefan.
Damon loved Elena more than he ever loved Katherine. He was willing to give everything up to spend a normal human life with her. They defeated every odd when the universe seemed to be against them.

It is revealed that Elena is a Petrova Doppelgänger (like Katherine, Amara and Tatia), which is thus responsible for her being identical to her ancestor, Katherine Pierce (née Katerina Petrova). This also has the implication of making her a supernatural creature.
