The German battleship Bismarck was sunk by the British Royal Navy in the North Atlantic on May 27, 1941, after being crippled by torpedoes (which jammed its rudder) from Fleet Air Arm Swordfish biplanes and then bombarded by the battleships HMS King George V and HMS Rodney, alongside cruisers like HMS Dorsetshire, which fired the final torpedoes, leading to its scuttling and sinking.
The third phase on the morning of 27 May was an attack by the British battleships King George V and Rodney, supported by the heavy cruisers Norfolk and Dorsetshire. After about 100 minutes of fighting, Bismarck was sunk by the combined effects of shellfire, torpedo hits and scuttling.
Bismarck's dismissal, which was to have so many unforeseen consequences, was the result of a clash of policy and personality between the Iron Chancellor and his new master, William II.
Of its crew of over 2,200, only 116 survived. This event not only signified the vulnerability of large battleships but also marked a turning point in naval warfare, as submarines and aircraft carriers began to dominate military strategies thereafter.

In the end, only a small portion of the battleship's wreckage was successfully salvaged. The rest of the ship's remnants were left in the fjord, slowly decaying and becoming a popular site for divers and underwater explorers. Today, the Tirpitz wreck is considered a war grave and is protected under Norwegian law.

Tirpitz was actually 2,200 tons heavier than its better-known sister ship. Unfortunately for the Kriegsmarine, this effort coincided with the emergence of air power as a strategic tool in naval warfare. The British navy, with contributions from Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers, sank the Bismarck on May 27, 1941.
From her heroic sortie at Pearl Harbor to her exemplary war record and incredible toughness in the face of efforts to sink her, Battleship Nevada is indeed a ship to be remembered.
