Odin, the All-Father, placed the famous worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir, declaring, "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor," after punishing Thor by exiling him to Earth, making it so only truly deserving individuals could lift it. While dwarves forged the hammer, Odin added these specific magical conditions to teach Thor humility, notes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
As Thor comes of age, Odin gifts him a magic hammer, Mjolnir, which is enchanted so that only the worthy may lift it.
When Odin first tried to wield Mjolnir, he couldn't control it due to the God Tempest still retaining its power. The hammer devastated Asgard as it flew out of control. Out of spite, Odin cast an enchantment on the hammer to prevent anyone else from wielding it.
The final mention of the hammer in Skáldskaparmál offers an explanation of its manufacture by the dwarf brothers Eitri and Brokkr.

The enchantment, however, held that if Mjolnir left Thor's grasp or was removed from his person for more than 60 seconds, both would revert back to their mortal states until they were reunited.
If we follow the generations listed and apply a simple average of ~30 years per generation, the timeline places Odin around 2,000 years ago—roughly the same era as Jesus. Of course, not all sources agree: Some traditions say Odin came from Troy nearly 3,000 years ago.
The Marvel Visual Dictionary explained that Loki does not turn back blue even upon death because of Odin's magical change to him. The only known beings powerful enough to surpass Hela were her father Odin in his prime and the Fire Demon Surtur at full power. As Odin's firstborn, Hela had a supernatural connection to Asgard and drew power from it, enabling her to perform incredible supernatural feats.
