NGK spark plugs are made by Niterra Co., Ltd., the new corporate name for the company formerly known as NGK Spark Plug Co., Ltd. since April 2023, continuing its legacy as a leading Japanese manufacturer of ignition components and technical ceramics, known globally for quality and innovation.
Established in 1966, Niterra North America, Inc. (formerly NGK SPARK PLUGS (USA)) was founded as a subsidiary of Niterra Co., Ltd. (formerly NGK SPARK PLUG Co., Ltd.), of Japan. Its corporate headquarters was first located in California and then moved to its current location in Wixom, Michigan.
NGK, Denso, and Bosch are the reputable spark plug suppliers. Champion is another OEM supplier but I would put them a tier below. Torch is an OEM supplier in China and probably another tier below.
NGK spark plugs are particularly touted for their strong performance in high-speed, high-stress scenarios such as racing or heavy-duty driving. Denso, on the other hand, shines in everyday driving conditions, particularly emphasizing fuel efficiency and engine smoothness.
Japan remains NGK SPARK PLUG's manufacturing heartland, home to its headquarters and four of its largest production plants. Japan is also home to the ignition specialist's highest volume spark plug plant worldwide, the Kyushu island-based Miyanojo factory, which produces hundreds of millions of spark plugs each year.
NGK and Bosch both produce high-quality platinum spark plugs that offer a good balance between performance and price. If you're looking for the exceptional life and performance, iridium is the way to go. These plugs last longer and produce more consistent sparks for improved combustion.
Overheating: Overheating can cause the spark plug's electrodes to wear out more quickly. This is often due to issues like incorrect spark plug gap, poor fuel quality, too little fuel available for combustion, or engine overheating.
All DENSO Spark Plugs are manufactured in Japan, Indonesia, China and USA. If a part claims to be a DENSO component but has been manufactured outside of these areas, then it is not genuine. Counterfeit spark plugs may also have subtle differences in the logo placement.
NGK and Denso are two leading Japanese brands that have proven their reliability and technological excellence over decades. Selecting the right spark plugs for your specific car model is an important step towards stable and economical engine performance.
Denso and NGK are considered to be reputable brands, even being OEM suppliers for Toyota. High-quality plugs will ensure proper ignition, efficient fuel consumption, and durability.
NGK gives them a life expectancy of 40-50k miles. But they have to temper their projections as driving conditions and motor modifications differ. Typically we have found you can expect 60,000 to 80,000 miles on an unaltered motor.
What does 'NGK' stand for? 'NGK' stands for 'Nippon Gaishi Kkabushiki-gaisha' which is the Japanese name of NGK Insulator Company Ltd., the company which NGK SPARK PLUG was spun-off from in 1936.
The most common signs of bad spark plugs include start-up trouble, rough idling, sluggish acceleration, declining fuel economy, engine misfiring, and engine knocking.
Look out for a machine cutting mark on the caulking (could indicate a counterfeit) Take a close look at the crimping portion of the plug. If you can see a machine cutting mark on it, be alert: this is indicative of a fake product.
"Niterra" is a coined word, combining the Latin words "niteo" meaning "shine" and "terra" meaning "the planet earth." It expresses the Group's desire and stance to be a company that not only contributes to a sustainable society, but also makes the entire global environment brighter.
Iridium spark plugs are typically less expensive than ruthenium, but the difference is modest. Ruthenium plugs come at a premium but may offer a longer service life and better performance under stress.
Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental.
Denso Corporation (株式会社デンソー, Kabushiki-Gaisha Densō) is a global automotive components manufacturer headquartered in the city of Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. After becoming independent from Toyota Motor, the company was founded as Nippon Denso Co. Ltd. (日本電装株式会社, Nippon Densō Kabushiki-Gaisha) in 1949.
thick [adjective] (of liquids, mixtures etc) containing solid matter; not flowing (easily) when poured.
Because Denso has a longstanding partnership with Toyota as an OEM supplier, its parts follow Toyota's manufacturing specifications. This relationship means that when you purchase a genuine Denso component, you will receive the same quality as the part originally installed in your vehicle at the factory.
Dry wet spark plugs and clean them
Now that you have removed the plugs, you can clean them efficiently. Using a clean microfibre cloth, wipe the area to disturb any stubborn grime. Once you are happy with the cleanliness of your plugs, apply a layer of WD-40® Multi Use Product and leave it to dry.
Because your vehicle's engine is not operating at its peak temperature when idling, fuel is only partially combusted, leading to a fuel residue buildup on cylinder walls. This is the gunk that can foul your sparkplugs and muck up your exhaust systems.
