There isn't one single "most feared" character, as fear in Peaky Blinders shifts, but Thomas Shelby becomes the ultimate feared figure through his cunning and ruthlessness; however, antagonists like the volatile Alfie Solomons, the brutal Luca Changretta, and the chillingly authoritative Oswald Mosley are also considered among the most dangerous and feared rivals.
Grace Shelby
Although Grace is completely loyal to Tommy, she is distrusted by Polly and Arthur. His love for Grace makes Tommy stronger, but also more vulnerable. She is the only thing he still truly cares about and enemies can hurt him.
Oswald Mosley is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Chief Inspector Campbell) of the BBC Crime series Peaky Blinders, serving as the main antagonist of Season 5 and Season 6.
Grace Shelby (née Burgess) was Tommy's first love in Peaky Blinders, but show creator Steven Knight says the story demanded her death.
Tommy Shelby
Tommy Shelby embodies everything I love about this show, memorable moments, badassery, character development, brilliance, intelligence.
A Brotherhood with Cillian Murphy: While their on- screen relationship was often tense and full of conflict, Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy's real-life bond was one of mutual respect and friendship. Hardy has stated that he and Murphy were "brothers" on set and that he loved the creative process of acting alongside him.
Cillian Murphy was not the first choice for Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders. Series creator wanted Jason Statham.
Killed by the Changretta family - Season 4 Episode 1, “The Noose” John Shelby dies in Peaky Blinders season 4, and it's easily one of the most heartbreaking deaths in the show. Of all the Shelby brothers, John (Joe Cole) had the biggest family and took the best care of them.
The officer is seen forcing himself upon Lizzie to her dismay before Thomas can reach them, but upon doing so, he kills the officer. Lizzie is in love with Thomas, and while he definitely cares for her, her love is unrequited.
Grace Shelby's death in Peaky Blinders was necessary for the show to continue because it prevents Tommy from finding happiness and gives him a reason to seek revenge.
She was killed by the IRA, as a consequence for her nephews' actions after they tried to have Oswald Mosley assassinated. Her body was then delivered to Thomas' house, Arrow House, where he broke down in tears from grief and guilt.
The Shelby family from the show Peaky Blinders has suffered many losses, with key members like John, Polly, Michael, Grace, and Arthur Sr. deceased by the series' end, but core surviving members include Tommy Shelby, Arthur Shelby, Ada Thorne, and younger relatives like Duke Shelby, with the final season ending ambiguously for Tommy but confirming many deaths. It's important to note the Shelbys are fictional, so their "aliveness" is within the show's narrative.
Treating PTSD
It's easy to see why people like Tommy, who experience PTSD due to traumatic events might turn to alcohol or drugs. But this increases mental health problems because it exacerbates them and can lead to severe anxiety, panic, depression, and suicidal ideation – as seen with Tommy.
Cillian Murphy has said he is nothing like his Peaky Blinders character Tommy Shelby, joking that he's not a “psychopathic gangster”. The Irish actor, 49, said in a new interview that it has been a gift and a privilege to play the character for more than a quarter of his life.
McCrory, who starred as Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in the BBC One crime drama, died from cancer last year at the age of 52. Gray's absence was written into the plotline in the opener, with news of her off-screen death having a huge impact on the gangster family.
The number one regret he has is marrying Lizzie. The reason he regrets marrying her is because he has put her through a lot of bad things that she didn't deserve. Lizzie wants Tommy to tell her everything that is happening. Tommy promises one day he will, but not yet.
She has little involvement within the Shelby family business or the Peaky Blinders, rather the marriage between the two was arranged in order to bring peace between the two families and provide a mother for John's four children.
The narrative begins in 1919, and largely revolves around Shelby's romance with Grace Burgess and his conflict with Inspector Campbell.
Vicente Changretta's threatening John's life causes John to go and beat up Angel, and to thrash then cut him over the eye. Yassin Charfi bro, even me, would've done the same thing Italians did. This is just a show. John's character died because of having other opportunities -- the actor himself.
Cillian Murphy expressed profound grief and admiration for his late Peaky Blinders co-star Helen McCrory, calling her the "beating heart" of the show and a dear friend, noting her passing made filming the final season incredibly difficult and bittersweet, describing the experience as "reeling" and "not a pleasant shooting experience," while praising her incredible talent, courage, and how she balanced work and family. He often spoke of her "magnificent" personality, kindness, and how she elevated every scene, struggling to comprehend her loss and missing her greatly, yet always deferring the spotlight to her family's grief.

The number one killer in the world is cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, responsible for about one-third of all global deaths, claiming nearly 18-20 million lives annually, and remains the leading cause across all regions, according to WHO and World Heart Federation. While COVID-19 caused significant deaths in recent years, CVD has consistently held the top spot for decades, with increases seen globally, especially in younger populations.
In February 2024, Murphy described Hardy as “one of the best actors in the business” and said a “great trust” and “nice kind of chemistry” had developed between them over the years.
Erasmus 'Duke' Shelby is the illegitimate firstborn son of Thomas Shelby and a woman called Zelda, as well as being the half-brother of Charles and Ruby Shelby.
