Tonic the Hedgehog is a false identity assumed by Metamorphia in the Issue 52 story, Face From The Past. Metamorphia's Tonic appearance looks identical to Sonic before he got his powers, which was fitting since Tonic was supposedly Sonic's long-lost twin brother.
Manic The Hedgehog, a character from Sonic Underground, is Sonic's brother and the drummer in the sibling's band. Manic is the most laid back of the family (yes, there's somebody more laid back than Sonic), though perhaps this is because he doesn't have any powers. This never held him back, though.

Originally, though, Sonic was given a human girlfriend. She was named Madonna and was a voluptuous blonde who towered over Sonic who is, after all, a hedgehog. Madonna was axed by SEGA of America though, who felt the character wouldn't be acceptable for the US market.
