The main religion in Israel is Judaism, with about three-quarters of the population identifying as Jewish, making it the world's only Jewish-majority country and a central place for Jewish identity. Islam is the second-largest religion, followed by Christianity and the Druze faith, with most Israeli Muslims being Sunni, while Christians include Melkite and Orthodox traditions.

But in many respects they were and remain second-class citizens, since Israel defines itself as the state of the Jewish people and Palestinians are non-Jews.
