It turns out, there are two ways to become a British princess: to be born the daughter of a prince, or to marry one. On top of that, only those born into the royal family can use the title princess (or prince, for that matter) before their name.
The main difference is that princesses are typically blood related, and duchesses are made. For example, Markle was granted the Duchess of Sussex title when she married Prince Harry, but she'll never be an actual princess because she wasn't born into the royal family.

After Henry VII married Elizabeth, her sister and the eldest daughter of Edward IV, Cecily was married in 1487 to John, Viscount Welles, the king's half-uncle.
Marrying a royal doesn't exactly make you Queen or King...or even a Princess. If a British queen marries, her husband is known as a king consort, but does not become king. In the case of Queen Elizabeth's husband, Prince Phillip, because he is Greek, he cannot hold the title as King.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001 but it has always been assumed that it could not apply to the crown as there would have to be an heir to the throne.
Prince is also a title of nobility (often highest), often hereditary, in some European states. The female equivalent is a princess.
Princess of Wales
Kate inherited the title from her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who was married to Prince Charles—now King Charles III—from 1981 to 1996. While Kate is colloquially referred to as Princess Catherine or Princess Kate, her correct royal name is actually Catherine, Princess of Wales.
On July 29, 1981, Charles married Lady Diana Frances Spencer, daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer. The royal wedding was a global media event, broadcast live on television and watched by hundreds of millions of people; following the ceremony, she took the title princess of Wales.
