Acute kidney failure can lead to loss of kidney function and, ultimately, death.
Generally, the lung is the first organ to fail after injury (failure after 3.7 +/- 2.8 days). Significant renal failure and the need for dialysis decreased to < 5%; other signs of organ dysfunction (gastric, central nervous system) are difficult to verify.
Within the following 24-72 hours, lung failure may set in. This can be followed by bacteremia, as well as renal, intestinal, and liver failure. Within two to three weeks, encephalopathy, cardiac failure, and death may occur.
In general, the last stage or two are considered the “end-stages.” This is the point where your organ is coming close to absolute failure. It's damaged enough and has lost enough of its functionality that you'll need artificial life support, or an organ transplant, to survive.

In most people who are dying, the body's normal systems start to operate more slowly. The heart beats a little more slowly, or with a little less force, and so blood is moved around the body more slowly. This means the brain and the other organs receive less oxygen than they need, and do not function as well.
Without dialysis, toxins build up in the blood, causing a condition called uremia. The patient will receive whatever medicines are necessary to manage symptoms of uremia and other medical conditions. Depending on how quickly the toxins build up, death usually follows anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
Stage 5 CKD means your kidneys are getting very close to failure or have already failed. Kidney failure is also called end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). If your kidneys fail, you will need to start dialysis or have a kidney transplant to live.
They Know They're Dying
Dying is a natural process that the body has to work at. Just as a woman in labor knows a baby is coming, a dying person may instinctively know death is near. Even if your loved one doesn't discuss their death, they most likely know it is coming.
This stage is also one of reflection. The dying person often thinks back over their life and revisits old memories.4 They might also be going over the things they regret.
The first organ system to “close down” is the digestive system. Digestion is a lot of work! In the last few weeks, there is really no need to process food to build new cells. That energy needs to go elsewhere.
Major organs that can fail include the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and intestines (gut). If one of these organs stops working, the patient will not be able to survive without the help of very strong medicines and/or machines. WHO IS AT RISK FOR ORGAN FAILURE?

Some of the most common end-of-life kidney failure signs include: Water retention/swelling of legs and feet. Loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Confusion.
The brain and nerve cells require a constant supply of oxygen and will die within a few minutes, once you stop breathing. The next to go will be the heart, followed by the liver, then the kidneys and pancreas, which can last for about an hour. Skin, tendons, heart valves and corneas will still be alive after a day.
Others start to cry and feel as though they won't be able to stop. Some people become angry and scared. Or they feel numb, as though they have no emotions. These are all very common and natural reactions.
In most cases, when a patient is receiving the care and support of hospice, they will not experience pain during the dying process. Instead, their body will naturally begin to shut down. They will begin to have a decreased desire to eat and drink and will start to sleep more.
