However, vinegar in laundry shouldn't be a routine addition because it can cause damage to washing machines. In addition, certain fabrics should not be overly exposed to vinegar, and there are laundry products it shouldn't be combined with.

Vinegar is best used as a pre-soak to remove odor or added to the rinse cycle as a fabric softener. The acid in vinegar can interfere with the cleaning ingredients in laundry detergent and make them less effective in removing soil.
To add vinegar to your washing, all you need to do is simply pour in the required amount into the compartment where you would normally add the fabric softener or laundry detergent. The washing machine will then add the vinegar to your wash.
Before going further, we have to warn you: adding vinegar or baking soda to the wash along with your laundry detergent increases the risk of poorer cleaning performance, as detergents are optimized for a specific pH level, which is altered by the presence of these two household additives in the wash.
Simply add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser or to a fabric softener ball. The white vinegar will act as a fabric softener AND it will keep your washing machine smelling fresh and clean!
If you don't have time for a deep clean, a quick tip is to simply pour in some white vinegar through the detergent drawer and put on the hottest wash you can. This will at least start breaking down limescale and sterilising the washer.
Add two cups of white cleaning vinegar to detergent dispenser. Run the washer through a complete cycle. Run another cycle on the highest level and at the hottest water temperature, this time adding 1/2 a cup of baking soda to the drum. When the cycle is done, wipe inside drum of washer with a damp microfiber cloth.
FRONT LOAD (HE) WASHER: If you have a HE (front loading) washer, place your towels in the washer with 1 cup of baking soda (no detergent). Start the washer let the water fill for about 1 minute. Add 2 cups of vinegar to the “liquid” cup (again no detergent) and allow the load to run through.
'One cup per two big towels works well,' she says. Either pour it into the fabric softener dispenser of your machine or straight into the drum. Set your machine to the hottest wash possible and let the vinegar get to work – there's no need to rinse afterward.
Add one cup of distilled white vinegar to one gallon of hot water. Submerge the white fabric into the mixture and allow it to soak overnight, then launder as usual.
“With continual use, vinegar can literally melt hoses, causing leaks and thereby possibly all kinds of additional damage to the house,” says Grayson. In his experience, front-load washers are especially susceptible to vinegar-related damage. Plus, it may not even be doing much.
Wash Towels Before You Use Them
To get rid of that buildup, add a 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle during the initial wash. Pro tip: In general, skip fabric softeners and dryer sheets when washing and drying bath towels to ensure they remain as absorbent as possible over time.
Mildly acidic (5 to 6 percent), white vinegar will not only soften clothes, but also freshen the scent, and it is especially effective at removing and preventing mildew odors. The mild acid is just strong enough to dissolve the residue alkaline soap residue, which is where the softening action comes from.
Make sure the drum of your washer is empty, then select the “clean cycle” or “tub clean” setting on your washer. (If your washer doesn't have a cleaning cycle, just select the hottest and largest load settings.) Add 2 cups of vinegar to the detergent tray, which will help get rid of odor-causing deposits and mildew.
When you use vinegar as a fabric softener, your clothes will come out fresh and odourless. The strong vinegar smell is not left behind on the clothes. Many commercial fabric softeners, on the other hand, will leave heavily scented residue on your clothes.
Try adding half a cup at the beginning of the wash cycle. Alternatively, you can soak the sheets and pillowcases in vinegar and warm water prior to placing them in your washing machine. In either case, the vinegar smell will wash out, leaving the items smelling fresh.
Fill the drum with a ½ cup of baking soda and a quart of vinegar and run a wash cycle containing just a couple of clean hand towels (many manufacturers don't recommend running the washer completely empty). Use the hottest water setting, largest load size, and the longest wash cycle.
