In 1964 John Landi wanted something to make passing traffic stop at his road side banana stall. He had heard of a “Big Pineapple” in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic.
In 2005, The Village Building Co. acquired a 50% interest in The Big Banana Fun Park and operated the asset in joint venture with the Rubie Family until 2016 when we became the sole owner. The Big Banana is Australia's original and most iconic Big Thing. No trip along the Coffs Coast is complete without a stop!

Builder Alan Harvey began work on the 13m long, 5m high, 2.4m wide banana in September 1964 and had it finished in just three months, allowing the impressive-looking timber-framed, lurid yellow ferroconcrete structure to open just in time for Christmas.
Coffs Harbour is famous for its bananas and once the hillsides were covered in banana plantations producing almost all of the nation's crop. However in recent times, as north Queensland began to increase production, Coffs Harbour's production has dropped to just a few percent.

Major holiday and service centre famous for the 'Big Banana'. Coffs Harbour is a major coastal resort town noted for its banana plantations, its resorts, its mild climate and its fishing. It is beautifully located where the mountains tumble down to the seal.
The Big Banana itself is made out of concrete. It was designed by engineer Alan Chapman and built by Alan Harvey, opening on 22 December 1964.
Where it's Grown: Australian Cavendish Bananas are grown in tropical and sub tropical regions. The tropical banana growing regions of Norethern Queensland, mainly around Tully and Innisfail, produce more than 90% of Australia's Bananas.
The Big Banana structure is 13 metres long, 5 metres high and 2.4 metres wide. When it was first built, it was the biggest banana in the world and this phrase was displayed on the signage beneath it. Although this signage has long been removed, it is still believed to be the biggest.
Sometimes claimed to be the first big thing in Australia, the Big Banana was built just north Coffs Harbour on the Pacific Highway in 1964.

Coffs is basically a larger version of Port M. Both have some decent restaurants and both have beautiful beaches. Coffs is more tourist orientated so has a better selection of accommodation and food, Port is more of a retirement area.
Bananas and berries are not the whole story of horticulture in the region surrounding Coffs Harbour. Avocados and macadamias are also grown, along with some vegetables.
This bunyip was in Australia's big banana park. It says in a natural body of water. It began to sink over time til it was no longer visible. Some say it still sits at the bottom of the lake because they didn't bother taking it out if it isn't bothering anything.
